Amry Shelby scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Wildcat men in a 78-59 win over in-state rival Nebraska-Kearney last Thursday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  Shelby scored 19 of his points in the first half and finished the game 7 of 14 from the field and a perfect 8 for 8 at the free throw line.  After three games, Shelby leads the NSIC in scoring averaging 24.3 points per game and is shooting 54.8 percent from the field and 95 percent (19 of 20) at the free throw line.

NSIC Men's Basketball Notes:
AUGUSTANA COLLEGE -#1 Cameron McCaffrey (G, 6-1, 170, Sr., Portland, Ore./Century) averaged 18.5 points helping Augustana to wins over Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines last week. On Wednesday, McCaffrey scored 23 points on 5 of 8 shooting against Black Hills State. The senior scored 11 of his 23 points from the free throw line as he was 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. On Friday night, McCaffrey led Augustana in scoring for the third straight game with 14 points. McCaffrey dished out a career-high nine assists in the contest just missing his first career double-double. The senior was 14 of 17 from the free throw line over the two games.
#34 Daniel Jansen (F, 6-9, 2-30, Fr., Orange City, Iowa/MOC-Floyd Valley) averaged 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds last week helping the Vikings to a 2-0 record. Jansen was 10 of 17 from the field (58.8 percent) and 4 of 6 from the free throw line. Against South Dakota Mines on Friday night, Jansen scored 12 points for the second straight game, third straight in double figures, and led the Vikings on the glass with seven rebounds.

BEMIDJI STATE - #3 Zach Noreen (F, 6-6, 255, Jr., Avon, Minn. / Albany HS) guided the Bemidji State men’s basketball team to a 1-1 start to the 2012-13 season with 13.5 points and 3.5 rebounds per game on 55.0 percent shooting from the field (11-for-20) and 62.5 percent shooting from 3-point land (5-for-8). He also added three steals, two assists and a blocked shot in 24.0 minutes per game. In a 76-49 victory Friday against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, Noreen led the team in points with a career-high 16 and tied for the team-lead in rebounds with five. He shot 4-for-5 (80%) from beyond the arc to propel BSU to a 10-for-18 (55.6%) evening from 3-point range. Noreen’s rebound total and field goals made (6) each tied a career-best, while his 3-pointers made established a new career-high for the junior. He scored a team-high 11 points on 5-for-10 (50%) shooting from the field in the loss to No. 5 Metro State University.
Bemidji State  began the 2012-13 season at the NSIC/RMAC Challenge Nov. 16-17 in Winona, Minn. and posted a 1-1 record with a season-opening 76-49 victory against University of Colorado-Colorado Springs before falling to No. 5 Metro State University 67-41. Junior Zach Noreen scored a career-high 16 points to guide four players in double digit scoring in Friday’s win and his 4-for-5 performance from beyond the arc lifted the Beavers to a 10-for-18 (55.6%) evening from 3-point land. The games not only started a new year for BSU, but a new era in program history with the debut of head coach Mike Boschee, who was hired as Bemidji State’s 16th head coach in July. BSU completes its nonconference schedule in Michigan Nov. 20-21 at Michigan Tech University and Finlandia University. The Beavers have played Michigan Tech in the each of the last two seasons and have played to a 1-1 record. BSU downed the Huskies 63-58 at home last season to snap a six-game losing streak versus MTU and lead the all-time series 37-17. Bemidji State has played Finlandia twice in the last three seasons and own a 4-0 all-time record against the Lions.

CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Concordia-St. Paul dropped its season opener 79-70 to Clarke University on Saturday afternoon despite two players going for 20-plus points for the Golden Bears. Terez VanPelt led all scorers with 22 points while adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals with just one turnover in 36 minutes running the point. Cole Olstad added 21 points with six rebounds and three assists with a steal and also turned it over just once in 33 minutes. Both players set new career-highs while Olstad matched his previous career-high in rebounds, doing it for the fifth time. Both players are sophomores for Concordia. The Golden Bears fly to the Seattle area to take on defending NCAA Champion Western Washington, ranked sixth in the country, on their home floor this Friday, November 23 with a 9:30 p.m. central time tip in the WWU Chuck Randall Classic. On Saturday, they’ll stay in Bellingham, Wash. To play Alaska-Fairbanks with a 5 p.m. (central) tip.

UNIVERSITY OF MARY - Alex Dorr (F, 6-6, 205, Sr., Norwalk, IA / Norwalk HS / Iowa State) had a career night in leading the University of Mary to a 79-63 win over Mayville State in the Marauders home opener. The senior forward led all players with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Both totals were career-highs. He hit all four free throw attempts and was 8-of-15 from the floor. Dorr also added two assists and a steal. His rebound total nearly matched the Comets total of 17… The Marauders close out their non-conference schedule at Florida Southern’s FSC Ledger Media Group/Terrace Hotel Classic in Lakeland, FL, on Nov. 23-24. U-Mary first plays St. Joseph’s College (IN) before facing the host squad. The Moccasins are receiving votes in the NABC/Division II Coaches Poll.

MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON  - Abdou Niang (Sr., F, Dakar, Senegal) grabbed a school-record 22 rebounds against Finlandia University Thursday as the Golden Eagles upended the Lions 81-75 on the road in Hancock, Mich. The mark breaks Justin Henry’s school record of 19 which was set in 2004. Niang tallied a double-double on the game with 11 points. He was stepping into the starting line-up for Broderick Schmidt, who is missing time due to injury.

MINNESOTA DULUTH  - UMD picked up the first win of the Matt Bowen coaching era last Saturday, upending Michigan Tech in non-conference action at Romano Gymnasium. The Bulldogs built a strong first-half lead behind efficient shooting, going a collective 14-for-27 from the field (52 percent) on their way to going up 36-26 at the break. UMD leaned on the Huskies from there, withstanding a second-half surge and holding on to outscore Michigan Tech over the final 20 minutes of play. The Bulldogs, who improved to 1-1 on the season with the victory, were led on offense by junior center Brett Ervin, who collected 20 points, adding a rebound and three assists.

MINNESOTA STATE - The Mavericks wrapped up a trip to the West Coast last weekend with two victories in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic hosted by Sonoma State.  Minnesota State opened the two-day event with a 75-68 victory over the host, Sonoma State, before wrapping up with a 86-78 win over San Francisco State.   Junior forward Connor O’Brien was also named to the all-tournament team after averaging 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds.
Jarvis Williams (G, 6-6, 195, Sr., Milwaukee, Wis) averaged a double-double last weekend as he helped the Mavericks earn a pair of victories in the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic hosted by Sonoma State.  Williams, who averaged 15.5 points and 10.5 rebounds during the event, opened with a 14-point, 10-rebound effort against the host Seawolves before responding with a 17-point, 11-rebound effort against San Francisco State.  For his efforts in the event, Williams was named the tournament’s most valuable player.  Additionally, he shot .542 from the floor on the weekend and led MSU in minutes played with 67, averaging 33.5 per game.

MSU MOORHEAD - Jordan Filipek (F, 6-6, Jr., Willmar, Minn. / Willmar HS) had a solid all-around game in helping Minnesota State University Moorhead to an 88-58 win over Minnesota-Morris on Nov. 16. Filipek had 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting and added seven rebounds and two assists in just 18 minutes of action. For the season Filipek is averaging 6.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.
Senior guard Anthony Tucker continued his outstanding start with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists in the Dragons’ 88-58 win over Minnesota-Morris on Nov. 16. Tucker scored 15 of his points in the first half in helping the Dragons to a 20-point halftime lead. He is averaging 21.3 points, 7.7 rebounds and 5.1 assists per game on the season.

MINOT STATE - Kelvin Fraser (Sr., F, Brooklyn, N.Y.), the team’s all-time leader in blocked shots, finished with four more, a game-high 15 points and seven rebounds in MISU’s 86-27 win over NCAA Division III Northland College in NCAA Division II men’s basketball Sunday at the MSU Dome.

NORTHERN STATE - Michael Emge (G, 6-5, 175, So., Faribault, Minn./Faribault HS) canned 6 of 8 treys en-route to a career-high 23 points in NSU’s home-opening win over Dakota State on Friday evening.  He added another ten points on Sunday against a scrappy Dickinson State team.  For the weekend, Emge was 12 of 21 from the floor (57.1 percent) and 7 of 13 from long range (53.8 percent), while averaging 16.5 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while leading the Wolves to their third straight victory.

SIOUX FALLS - Sioux Falls demonstrated strong interior defense, while applying perimeter pressure to hold their second straight opponent under 50 points Saturday night in a convincing 69-49 victory over South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Sophomore guard Keaton Moffitt led the way for the Cougars, posting a game-high 13 points. His total was a career-best. The Cougars’ stellar defensive performance was steered by the play of senior guard A.J. Holland and sophomore center Bryan Kielpinski. Holland tallied four steals, while Kielpinski finished with career-highs in both blocks and rebounds, posting five and eight respectively. In total, USF altered six Hardrocker shots and forced 22 turnovers, which were converted into18 points for the Cougars. USF improved to 2-0, while SDSM&T dropped to 1-2.

SMSU - Southwest Minnesota State dropped its only game of the week, losing 75-67 to Michigan Tech in a game played at the PE Gym in Marshall.  The game was played in the PE Gym since the R/A Facility was used for a concert.  Junior center Nick Smith (6-9, 245) led SMSU with 13 points and 11 rebounds, recording his third straight double-double of the season.  Smith finished the game shooting 6 of 13 from the field and also had one steal and one assist.
SMSU continues its tough non-conference schedule this week, playing at NCAA Division I South Dakota State on Wednesday, before facing Central Missouri and Northwest Missouri State this Saturday and Sunday at the Northwest Missouri State Classic.  UCM and NWMSU were picked to finish 1-2 in the MIAA preseason poll.

ST. CLOUD STATE - The Huskies opened the 2012-13 season last Friday with a 67-48 win at crosstown rival, St. John’s University. Theo Rothstein (Sr., F, St. Michael, MInn.) led all players with 16 points. He was five of eight from the field and collected four rebounds and two assists. SCSU had nine blocks in the game led by James Fort (So., C, Fremont, Neb.) with four. Junior transfer Chris Larson (Jr., C, Hudson, Iowa) had three blocks. St. Cloud State travels to Lakeland, Fla., where the Huskies will play Florida Southern on Friday, Nov. 23 at 6:30 p.m. (CT) and Saint Joseph’s College on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 4:15 p.m. Florida Southern received votes in the NABC Division II Coaches preseason poll and are ranked 15th in the Division II Bulletin preseason top 25. The Mocs are 1-0 heading into Thanksgiving week and advanced to the NCAA tournament last season. St. Joseph’s College (Indiana) is 0-2 heading into Thanksgiving weekend play.

UPPER IOWA - Sam Elgin (W, 6-6, 198, Sr., Center Point, Iowa) scored 16 points and pulled down 7 rebounds in Upper Iowa’s win at Truman State.  The Peacocks held off a late Bulldog rally for the victory improving to 2-0 on the season.  Elgin hit four trifectas in the game and added an assist and a steal.  The Peacocks shot well in the first half of last Wednesday’s non-conference match up with the Bulldogs of Truman State, but had to hold off the home team’s second half rally for a three-point win, 70-67.  Three Peacocks reached double figures on the night led by Elgin’s 16 points.  Joey Woods and Wentzien both added 13 points, while Bo Pagel scored 9 and Jake Hughes chipped in 8.  Jake Shonka came off the bench to pull down a team-high 8 rebounds and Elgin grabbed 7 off the glass.  Hughes and Woods handed out 4 and 3 assists, respectively.  Upper Iowa will head to Maryville, Mo. this week to compete in the Northwest Missouri State Classic against the host Bearcats on Saturday, Nov. 24, and the Mules of Central Missouri on Sunday, Nov. 25.

WINONA STATE -  Kellen Taylor, F, 6-7, Plymouth, Minn. (Wayzata) scored a career high 21 points in a win over UC-Colorado Springs, averaging 14.5 points per game in a pair of WSU contests. Taylor had 21 points on 5-of-9 shooting against UCCS while hitting all three of his 3-point attempts. Taylor also averaged 3.0 rebounds while passing out a pair of assists and recording two steals. He was also a perfect 10-of-10 from the free throw line. He shot .615 percent from the floor and .750 from three on the weekend.
