BURNSVILLE, Minn. -- Augustana earned the 2011-12 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) / U.S. Bank All-Sports Award. The Vikings amassed 135.5 points, a mere 8.2 points ahead of second place Minnesota State. This marks the second consecutive year that Augustana has earned the all-sports award as it joins Minnesota State, Winona State and Minnesota Duluth as the only other schools to win the award in its 13-year history. The Vikings will be presented their award on Wednesday, July 11 at the NSIC Hall of Fame Banquet in St. Cloud, Minn.
Augustana won four titles during the 2011-12 season, including men’s and women’s cross country, women’s golf and women’s tennis. Their women’s cross country team went on to win the National Championship, the first cross country championship in league history.
Minnesota State had another solid year as well, scoring 127.3 points after winning six titles. The Mavericks took home the men’s golf, indoor and outdoor men’s track & field, baseball, softball and tied for the football title.
Winona State finished in third place with 105 points and Minnesota Duluth was fourth with 100.8 points.
St. Cloud State was fifth with 97.3 and U-Mary was sixth with 82.5 points. Minnesota Duluth and St. Cloud tied with Minnesota State for the football championship. UMD also tied with Concordia-St. Paul for the volleyball championship while St. Cloud State won the NSIC Wrestling Championship. Winona State won the NSIC soccer regular season title while U-Mary took home the indoor and outdoor women’s track & field championships. Wayne State was eighth after winning the women’s basketball title, while Concordia-St. Paul was ninth as they tied with UMD for top honors in volleyball before they went on to win their fifth consecutive national championship.
The winner of each title in a conference-sponsored championship receives points totaling the number of teams in that sport plus one. The next place finisher receives points totaling the number of teams less the number of places from first place. Ties in the standings at any level shall result in the totaling of points and distributed equally. Indoor and outdoor track & field are computed at half the total points as listed in the previous mentioned categories.
