St. Cloud, Minn. -  Wayne State College was named winner of the 2011-12 Northern Sun Conference Sportsmanship Award Wednesday evening at the annual NSIC Hall of Fame Banquet in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  The award was presented by NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond to WSC interim athletic director Mike Barry, marking the first time that WSC has been presented with the honor.

Wayne State is one of just four institutions to receive the distinct honor.  Since its inception in 2008, only Northern State (2007-08), Bemidji State (2008-09 and 2010-11) and the University of Mary (2009-10) have received the honor.

“It’s a tribute to the athletes, coaches, fans and staff at Wayne State for receiving this award,” said Barry.  “It’s a tremendous honor for Wayne State College.”

NSIC Commissioner Butch Raymond said, “The NSIC is very excited about the competitive nature of our league, but just as important is the environment that our student-athletes compete in,” remarked Raymond.  “The NSIC Sportsmanship Award was developed to honor a school that consistently demonstrates a positive environment and due to the fact that the award is selected by our head coaches and SAAC (Student Athletic Advisory Committee) makes the honor all the more meaningful.”
