The win also keeps SMSU’s hopes alive for a berth in the Mineral Water Bowl Kern has directed an SMSU offense that set a school record on Saturday for total offense in a single season. SMSU has now racked up 5,495 yards, surpassing the previous record of 5,303 yards held by the 1987 team. # 86 Aaron Roth (WR/KR, 5-10, 180, Jr., Plymouth, Minn. / Wayzata HS)
University of Minnesota Duluth
Aaron Roth returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown which proved to be the game-winning score in UMD’s 32-14 victory at the University of Mary. His touchdown came with just under six minutes to go before the half and the Bulldogs holding on to a slim 10-7 lead over the Marauders. Roth, a 2012 All-NSIC North Division first team selection and BSN second team All-American, became the first Bulldog bring back a punt for six points since he accomplished that feat two years ago as a true freshman. The 83 yards was a career best for Roth, who is averaging a nifty 14.4 yards per return this fall.
Team Notes:
Augustana
#20 Dajon Newell (RB, 5-10, 189, Jr., Lakeville, Minn./North HS) led Augustana on the ground against Winona State picking up 65 rushing yards on 13 carries. Newell averaged 5.0 yards per carry and scored his 21st career touchdown on a two-yard carry. He also broke-off a 31 yard run in the game, marking his fourth run of the season of 30 or more yards.
#47 Brandon Mohr (LB, 6-0, 230, So., Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington HS) led Augustana defensively at Winona State racking up 12 tackles, including eight solo stops. Mohr also recorded 3.5 tackles for loss in the game and a sack. Mohr has recorded 10 or more tackles in a game five times this season.
#18 Ben Albrecht (K, 6-1, 210, Jr., Fargo, N.D./North HS) was a perfect 3 for 3 on extra point attempts at Winona State and improved to 13 for 13 on the season on point-after attempts. Albrecht also nailed a 27-yard field goal against the Warriors and is 4 of 5 on the season on field goal attempts.
Bemidji State
#4 Avery Walker (RB, 5-10, 202, Sr-1L, Milwaukee, Wis. / Mesabi Range CC) fell just eight yards shy of his sixth, 100-yard rushing game of the season in a 35-17 road loss to MSU Moorhead. He totaled 92 yards on 28 carries (3.3 yards per carry) and added a team-high 29 yards receiving on two catches for a total of 121 all-purpose yards. Walker ranks fifth in the NSIC in rushing (112.0 yards per game) and sixth in all-purpose yards per game (129.2 ypg).
#47 Buckley Wright (OLB, 6-0, 225, Sr-3L, Sioux City, Iowa / Bishop Heelan Catholic HS) led all defensive players with 13 tackles (six solo) at MSU Moorhead. He added one tackle for loss (-1 yard) and recovered his first fumble of the season. He also recorded a pass break-up.
#37 Zach Pulkinen (P/K, 5-11, 200, Sr-3L, Minot, N.D. / College of Idaho) scored five points, averaged 58.2 yards per kickoff and 44.5 yards per punt at MSU Moorhead. He was 2-for-2 on extra point attempts and 1-for-2 on field goals, knocking threw a 24-yarder. Two of his four kickoffs went for touchbacks, as he totaled 233 yards. Pulkinen totaled 267 yards on six punts, which included a 68 yard punt, his fourth 65-yard plus punt of the season. He had one touchback and put one kick inside the MSUM 20-yard line. His 42.3 yards per punt this season ranks second in the league.
BSU battled MSU Moorhead for the 80th time in its history and fell for just the second time in the last 14 meetings. BSU’s all-time longest rivalry also includes a traveling trophy, a Battle Axe, which the teams have been competing for since 1948. The Beavers had won four straight and 12 of the last 13 against the Dragons until a 28 point fourth quarter by MSUM reversed a 17-7 deficit into a 35-17 victory. BSU fell to 0-3 in 2013 when having a lead entering the fourth quarter. The loss marked the sixth straight for the Beavers, tying a head coach Jeff Tesch-era record for consecutive losses. Tesch’s first two seasons at BSU (1996 and 1997) each saw a six-game losing skid – both those teams finished 2-8. The Beavers hope to avoid their first seven-game losing streak since 1993, Nov. 16 at Minot State University (2-8; 2-8 NSIC, 1-5 NSIC North) in the season finale for both teams. Bemidji State is 13-1 all-time against its fellow Beavers, with the lone loss coming in 2002 in Bemidji, Minn.
BSU has won 10 straight against MISU, is 7-0 all-time in Minot, N.D. and eight times Bemidji State has held it to 14 points or less. Last season, BSU defeated Minot State 49-0 to secure a share of the NSIC North Championship.

University of Mary
Grant Singer (LB, 6-1, 215, Jr., Turtle Lake, ND / Turtle Lake-Mercer), named to the Capital One Academic All-District team earlier in the week, posted one of his best games of the season against #5 Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. The all-conference performer posted a season-high two sacks, tied his season-high with three tackles for loss and intercepted a pass. He cracked double digits in tackles for the fifth time this season with 13. The NSIC leader in tackles, Singer is second in sacks (7.5), tackles for loss (16.5) and fumbles recovered (3).
Elby Pope (WR/PR, 6-0, 193, Jr., Grand Forks, ND / Red River) posted his best receiving numbers of the season with six catches for 89 yards and a touchdown against the 5th ranked Bulldogs. Pope caught a 37-yard touchdown pass and a 28-yard reception set up the Marauders second score. The junior wideout also returned a punt 15 yards. He is tenth in the NSIC in receptions with 44 and third in punt return average (13.6).
In addition to Singer, fellow Marauders defenders John Oyloe and Troy Guptill also earned Capital One Academic All-District honors. Oyloe, a two-time All-NSIC North selection, is a senior with a 3.85 GPA in Business Administration. A junior and the NSIC sack leader, Guptill has a 3.77 GPA in Athletic Training. Singer, an All-NSIC North choice last year, has a 3.92 GPA in Business Administration. The three become the first U-Mary football players to earn this honor.
Myron Schulz will serve as head coach of the Marauders one final time when U-Mary hosts the University of Minnesota Crookston on Saturday, Nov. 16. The Marauders head coach for 15 seasons, Schulz has accepted a faculty position in the university’s School of Business. The winningest football coach in U-Mary history with 102 wins, he has been a member of the program’s coaching staff for 23 of the 26 seasons it has existed.
Minnesota Crookston
The University of Minnesota Crookston football team lost a tough one on Senior Day falling 28-0 to Northern State University after the Wolves had a productive first half with 21 points. The Golden Eagles struggled to get anything going offensively as they finished with just 105 offensive yards. Minnesota Crookston was led on the day by senior Keith McBride (RB, Lodi, Wis.), who finished with 64 yards on 11 carries.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the 2013 season Saturday on the road against University of Mary at 1 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D. UMC is still seeking their third win of the 2013 season, which would make the first time since 2001 that the Golden Eagles have had more than two wins.
Minnesota Duluth
Aaron Roth (RS, 5-10, 180, Jr., Plymouth, Minn.) returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown which proved to be the game-winning score in UMD’s 32-14 victory at the University of Mary Saturday. His touchdown came with just under six minutes to go before the half and the Bulldogs holding on to a slim 10-7 lead over the Maruaders.
Austin Sikorski (RB, 5-10, 200, Jr., Plover, Wis.) rushted 21 times for a game-high 113 yards and one touchdown at Mary Saturday afternoon. Sikorski, whose four-yard touchdown run came on the opening series of the second half and put the Bulldogs up 23-14, also caught one pass for another 11 yards.
The Bulldogs will bring a seven-game winning streak -- their longest since the 2010 season (when they went a perfect 15-0 and won the second of two NCAA II championships) -- into Saturday’s regular season finale at Northern State. UMD (9-1) has already won at least a share of its sixth straight NSIC North Division title and a win Saturday against the Wolves would all but assure the Bulldogs of a sixth NCAA II playoff berth in as many years. The Bulldogs have reeled off five consecutive victories at Northern State’s expense -- all coming since UMD rejoined the NSIC in 2008 -- and have outscored the Wolves 210-51. Included is a 42-0 triumph in 2009, UMD’s last road shut out.UMD ranks among the NCAA II leaders in bevy of statistical categories heading into the final week of the regular season including: total defense (8th; 287.4 yards per game), rushing offense (8th; 289.6 ypg), third down conversions defense (6th; 26.7 percent), rushing defense (9th; 89.1 ypg) and kickoff returns (5th; 26.9 ypr).

MSU posted 346 rushing yards against Sioux Falls, while holding the Cougars to 102 rushing yards.

Lee had nine tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and also had a key forced fumble in the fourth quarter which set up a Dragon touchdown. Lee had four solo stops and five assists. Lee leads MSUM in tackles (76) and tackles for loss (10.5) and is second on the team with two forced fumbles.
Wes Kramer (K, 6-3, 240, Sr. Northfield, Minn./ Northfield HS) battling a 30 mph wind, Kramer went a perfect 5-for-5 in extra points during the Dragons’ 35-17 win over Bemidji State in the battle for the Axe on Saturday. Kramer also averaged 60.5 yards per kickoff on the day.
Minot State
Minot State University played No. 17 St. Cloud State tough until midway through the third quarter before the Huskies pulled away for a 38-14 win Saturday. The Beavers trailed just 21-14 after a #2 Randel Barber (RB, 6-1, 199, So., Maricopa, Ariz. / Maricopa) 16-yard TD run with 6:38 to play in the third quarter. MSU scored on eight of their eleven offensive possessions and outgained the Cougars (5-5, 3-3), 563-346.USF freshman quarterback Matt Young completed 18-of-38 passes for a career-high 225 yards with one touchdown and one interception, while Carrington Hanna was 3-for-7 and was picked off once. Saturday’s game was the last at Bob Young Field for 17 seniors: Carrington Hanna, Wes Smith, Khiry McDonald, Aaron Hanna, Thomas Marshall, Jordan Johnson, Dakota Fiene, Jonathan Talbot, Tyler Swanson, Korben Leegaard, Chris Harris, Shane Hyronimus, Sam Dooyema, Joel Martens, Austin Vanhove, Jerry Brady and Tait Johannsen. St. Cloud State
St. Cloud State improved its home record to 5-0 this season with a 38-14 NSIC North Division win over Minot State. Ledell White (So., RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) rushed for 83 yards and two touchdown runs of six and 29-yards and Micheal Walker (Sr., RB, Walworth, Wis.) added 87 yards on the ground as part of the Huskies 268 yard rushing performance. The Huskies are 5-0 against the Dragons since re-joining the NSIC in 2008. St. Cloud State will celebrated the careers of 16 seniors on Senior Day.
Upper Iowa
Thanks to a come-from-behind victory on the road at Wayne State, the Peacock football team has secured their first winning season as an NCAA Division II institution. In fact, Saturday’s 24-21 win over the Wildcats guarantees the first winning season for the program since 1999 and is only the fifth campaign to end with more wins than losses since the 1966 season that ended with an 8-2 record. The three-point victory was no surprise given the track record when these two teams get together. Over the last two years, Wayne State claimed a three-point victory in each of the meetings; in 2010, Upper Iowa won a 21-20 decision on senior day in Fayette. It was also appropriate that the Wildcats and Wayne, Neb. be involved in this historic win. After all, Upper Iowa went to Wayne State in August of 2006 and won their first game as a member of the NSIC over WSC, 24-14.
Chris Smith is just 3 yards shy of the all-time career rushing mark at Upper Iowa. He trails T.C. Hicks (3,178 yards from 2004-07) by two. Smith has now 16 touchdowns on the season. Cole Jaeschke reset the completions in a season record at UIU with his 21 on Saturday. He now has 226 on the year. He needs 196 yards and 37 attempts to rewrite a pair of single-season records from a year ago in his final regular season start of 2013 versus Minnesota State. The UIU offense surpassed their total offensive output of a year ago to reestablish a new single-season record with a game to go. The Peacocks have racked up 4,915 yards of total offense surpassing the old high mark from 2012 by 241 yards.
UIU’s standouts included Smith (155 yards and 2 TDs on 39 carries), Jaeschke (164 yards passing and 1 TD, 35 yards rushing), Kaluzny (4 catches for 47 yards and 1 TD), Keaton Martin (11 tackles, 6 solo), Ethan Douglas (7 tackles, 6 solo, 1 for loss), Andera (4 tackles, 1 fumble forced) and Chayz Holt (4 tackles, 3 solo).
The Peacocks will wrap up their regular season with a 12 p.m. start next Saturday, Nov. 16. Upper Iowa will recognize their seniors prior to their matchup with the #1 team in all of NCAA Division II.
Wayne State
The Wayne State football team suffered its fifth loss this season by seven points or less this season with a 24-21 home loss to Upper Iowa Saturday afternoon at Cunningham Field in Wayne. Senior running back Charlie Davidson had 95 yards rushing on 19 carries and scored twice on runs of 10 and two yards in the first half to give the Wildcats an early 13-0 lead.
Defensively, senior safety Austan Pomajzl had a game-high 12 tackles to move past 300 career tackles (311) for his career at WSC to go along with two pass break ups.
Winona State
Chichi Ojika, RB, Sr., 5-8, 185, New Brighton, Minn. (Irondale) led the Winona State offense with 117 yards on the ground in the team’s 28-24 win over Augustana. Ojika got his afternoon off to a strong start, scoring on a 62-yard run on just his second carry of the game. The senior totaled 145 all-purpose yards on the day, adding one catch for 11 yards and a kickoff return for 17 yards. The senior has now rushed for 1,136 yards on the season, the seventh-best total for a Warrior in a campaign.
Morgan Weaver, LB, Jr., 6-1, 215, Country Club Hills, Ill. (Hillcrest) posted sacks on back-to-back plays on Augustana’s final drive of the day, preserving Winona State’s 28-24 victory over the Vikings. Weaver sacked AC quarterback Justin Heinrich on second and third downs, forcing a punt that helped WSU cement its victory. The junior led Winona State with nine total tackles on the day while also breaking up a pass. The Warriors held Augustana to just 88 yards rushing and 2.5 yards per carry.
Jeremy Neuman, P, Sr., 5-11, 185, Park Ridge, Ill. (Lakes Community) had a busy day against Augustana, punting the ball nine times in the Warriors’ 28-24 victory over the Vikings. Neuman averaged 38.4 yards per kick, including a long kick of 49 yards. Neuman was able to pin Augustana inside their own 20 yardline three times during the contest.
