Rutten averaged 18.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game on the week, cashing in a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds in a 84-80 win against No. 22 Michigan Tech. She shot 55-percent from the floor while also adding a pair of blocks, three steals, and three assists on the week. The Bulldogs have averaged 82.2 points per game so far in 2013-14. Tuesday night, UMD doubled up the UW-Superior with twelve Bulldogs scoring en route to an 89-43 victory.
2013-14 NSIC Women’s Basketball Notes
AUGUSTANA - Emily Schulte (G, 5-7, Sr., Sioux Falls, S.D. / O’Gorman) continued her strong start to the season by showing her versatility scoring 18 points, grabbing eight rebounds, picking up five assists, and recording three steals in a 75-65 win over Jamestown on Saturday. The senior displayed some impressive court vision against Presentation on Thursday, tying a career high with eight assists. Schulte also scored 14 points, including going four of seven from behind the three-point line. For the week, the Sioux Falls, S.D. native averaged 16 points, 6.5 assists, 5 rebounds, and 3.5 steals. Schulte also shot it well from deep, with a solid 46.5% (seven for 15) from three in the two wins.
11th-ranked Augustana started the week with a 75-65 win over William Penn on Saturday. Freshman Hayley McCarron had her breakout collegiate game in just her second career game with the Vikings, recording her first double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. The Vikings’ defense helped guide them to the win, holding the Statesmen to just 26-of-73 (35.6%) shooting from the field. Emily Schulte led Augustana in scoring, putting up 18 points. Schulte also grabbed eight rebounds, and dished out five assists in the victory. On Thursday, The Vikings put on a show for the fans at the Elmen Center, winning 108-46 against Presentation. Augustana’s freshman sniper Sydney Rome scored a career-high 20 points in victory, including hitting 6-of-9 threes in the game. The Vikings connected on 15 of 38 (39.5%) from beyond the arc in the game. The Vikings put the game out of reach with a 21-0 run over four minutes late in the first half, taking a 52-19 lead into halftime. Starting junior Shaunteva Ashley scored 19 points and recorded five assists in just 22 minutes of action. Freshman Allie Sievert grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds in the win. Schulte tied a career high with eight assists in the contest, while scoring 14 points, including going four of seven from the three. Augustana had a season-high 27 assists on 37 made shots in the game.
BEMIDJI STATE - #42 Kate Warmack (C, 6-2, Sr., East Grand Forks, Minn. / East Grand Forks HS) totaled 14 points and 10 rebounds in 18 minutes to help guide the Beavers to a 93-47 home victory against Finlandia Nov. 19. She went 6-for-9 (66.7%) from the field and a was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. She added a block and a steal, while four of her 10 rebounds came on the offensive glass. The double-double was her third of the season, which ranks first in the NSIC this season.
The Bemidji State women’s basketball team completed nonconference play with a 4-0 record for the second consecutive season after a 93-47 win against Finlandia University at the BSU Gymnasium Nov. 19. The Beavers now turn their attention to league play, as they travel to University of Minnesota Crookston Saturday for a 2 p.m. tilt. BSU swept the season series with UMC in 2012-13, which included a 58-48 road victory in Crookston, Minn. The Beavers are 19-13 all-time against UMC and are 2-3 in the last five meetings.
CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Rachel Hansen (G, 6’0”, Sr., Eagan, Minn. / Minnehaha Academy) was a force in the Golden Bears 74-57 win over Jamestown on Saturday night. She scored 20 points on 5-13 shooting and 10-15 from the free throw line as she consistently attacked the hoop. She completed the double-double with 11 rebounds, eight offensive, to go along with six assists and four steals. The double-double was the first of the year for the versatile point guard. She is currently averaging 10.2 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.5 steals per game.
Concordia (4-2) had a light week with only one game on the schedule. The Golden Bears hosted Jamestown on Saturday night and took care of business with a 74-57 win. The game had a pair of ties and six lead changes but all came in the first half. The Golden Bears put together a strong end to the half to go into the break leading by 11 and never looked back. In the second half, Jamestown only managed to trim the margin to single digits once, a nine point gap midway through the half. Concordia led by as many as 21 points late in the game as well. Concordia returns to Gangelhoff Center for non-conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 27 against Northern Michigan at 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Eve.
UNIVERSITY OF MARY - The University of Mary women’s basketball team was idle this past week. U-Mary will open conference play on Nov. 30 as they hit the road to take on Minot State University.
MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON - UMC team picked up a split to wrap up the non-conference slate with a 3-1 mark. The Golden Eagles struggled from the field in an up-tempo 91-69 loss to Mayville State University Tuesday. Minnesota Crookston was led on the game by 14 points from forward Katrina Moenkedick and 11 from guard Jaya Perkins. Minnesota Crookston bounced back the following day with a 98-61 win over Finlandia University. Minnesota Crookston had six players score double-figures on the game led by 14 points from Katrina Moenkedick and 12 apiece from Alexa Thielman and Ashley Martell.
The Golden Eagles will open NSIC play Sat., Nov. 30 at Lysaker Gymnasium against Bemidji State University at 2 p.m. The Beavers come into Crookston with an unblemished record of 4-0 following the non-conference season.
MINNESOTA DULUTH - UMD continued to put up big numbers on the offensive end in a pair of wins against UW-Superior and No. 22 Michigan Tech. The Bulldogs have averaged 82.2 points per game so far in 2013-14. Tuesday night, UMD doubled up the Yellowjackets with twelve Bulldogs scoring en route to an 89-43 victory. Saturday, the Bulldogs got off to an 18-point halftime lead and held on as the Huskies charged back in the second half, downing MTU 84-80.

MINNESOTA STATE - No. 24 Minnesota State finished its non-conference schedule with two wins over Metro State University and the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs by scores of 75-63 and 87-68 respectively. The mavericks connected on 57-of-130 (44%) from the field and 11-of-32 (34%) from behind the arc, while owning a +13 margin in the turnover column. MSU limited its opponents a 35% field goal performance, and only allowed five three point shots (21%) in the two contests.
Senior Ali Wilkinson (Blue Mounds, Wis.) paced the Mavericks, averaging 20 points and eight rebounds per contest while connecting on 11-of-21 (52%) and 18-of-22 (82%) from the charity stripe. Wilkinson posted 24 points and 12 rebounds in Friday’s 75-63 win over Metro State, marking her 27th career double-double, and the 14th time in her career she has scored more than 20 points in a contest.
MSU MOORHEAD - The MSUM women’s basketball team was idle last week. The Dragons (3-0) resume action on Monday against Valley City State, which will wrap up their nonconference season. MSUM opens NSIC play on Nov. 30 at home against Northern State. MSUM is led by senior forward Morgan Zabel, who leads the team in scoring (19.0 ppg), rebounding (7.3 ppg), assists (13) and steals (five). Sophomore guard Meghan Roehrich also is off to a good start for MSUM, averaging 12.0 points per game so far.
MINOT STATE - #40 Carly Boag (F, 6-2, Sr., Tamworth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) finished off the nonconference schedule with an impressive 24-point, 13-rebound performance to help the Beavers to a 74-60 win over former rival Dickinson State in the lone game for MISU this week. Boag was 11 for 18 from the floor and hit 2 of 4 free throws for her 24 points and had six offensive rebounds. She also finished with three steals, an assist and a block.
Minot State University fended off former rival Dickinson State 74-60 in the final game of the Beavers’ nonconference schedule Sunday to move to 4-0 to start the season. In the win, MISU dished out 24 assists on 29 field goals. Leading the way offensively was #40 Carly Boag (F, 6-2, Sr., Tamworth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) who earned another double-double with 24 points and 13 rebounds to go along with three steals. #22 Katie Hardy (F, 6-0, Jr., F, Fairview, N.D. / Fairview) hit for a season-high 18 points and had five rebounds, four assists and two steals in the win. #50 Christina Boag (F, 6-2, Jr., Tamworth, Australia / Abbotsleigh) just missed a double-double with nine points, nine rebounds, four assists and three steals. MISU battles rival University of Mary in its first NSIC contest Saturday at 4 p.m. at the Dome.
NORTHERN STATE - Rachel Krogman (F, 6-1, Jr., Elkton, S.D./Elkton-Lake Benton HS) notched her second double-double of the season for the Wolves in their 56-43 victory over Central Methodist. Krogman dropped 12 buckets and snagged 13 rebounds, eight of which were offensive. In her best outing thus far, Rachel went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line boosting her season percentage to 87.5%. Krogman also recorded her first block of the season in the game.
NSU recorded their third straight victory this past Saturday with a win over Central Methodist University (56-43). In the victory Rachel Krogman recorded her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 13 rebounds. As a team the Wolves, held the Eagles, who lead the NAIA in three point shooting percentage, to one three point basket made and an 8.3 percentage. NSU also defended CMU leading scorer Morgan Vetter, who averages 19.2 points a game, to a mere three points in the match-up. The Wolves scored 16 second chance points off their 15 team offensive rebounds, while out-rebounding the Eagles 44-41. Alison Kusler led the team in scoring with 13 points on the night, going 5-6 from the line while adding two threes on the afternoon. Kusler also recorded six rebounds, five of which were defensive. Sadie Stotesbery was just shy of her first double-double of the year scoring seven points and pulling down ten rebounds. She also accounted for four of the teams seven blocks on the night. NSU will continue the home stand Monday (11/25) for the first men’s and women’s double header of the 2013-14 season, as the Wolves match-up against NAIA opponent Mayville State University. Game time is set for 6 p.m. between the Wolves and Comets.
SIOUX FALLS - Taylor Varsho (So, 5-7, Chili, Wisc/Colorado State) had a great weekend of play for the Cougars as she dropped 16 points against Black Hills State and led all scorers in Saturday’s game with 21 points against SD Mines & Technology. Varsho finished up the weekend with seven rebounds, three assists, and shot 50% from the field (14/28 FG) and 47.6% from behind the arc (10/21 3pt).
The USF women’s basketball team took to the road this weekend and came away with two victories against non-conference opponents. On Friday night, the Cougars faced Black Hills State University and won 75-70. Senior Laura Johnson notched her first double-double of the season as she dropped 20 points and grabbed 10 boards. Johnson’s 20th point came with 1:31 left in the game when she hit a three-point shot to give the Cougars a 68-63 lead. The bucket also was the 1,000th career point for Johnson. Another important milestone was achieved on Friday by Travis Traphagen as the victory was the 100th in his career. On Saturday USF played the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and came away with a 76-51 victory. The Cougars took control of the game thanks to a 28-5 run over the last ten minutes of the first half. The Cougar defense showed it’s strength in the first 20 minutes of action as they held the Hardrockers to 21.4% on field goals and just 10% from behind the arc. The Cougars will close up the non-conference portion of the schedule this Tuesday as they play host to Nebraska-Kearney. Then on Saturday, USF play their first NSIC game of the season as they play Southwest Minnesota State at the Stewart Center.
SMSU - Alison Nagel (F, 6-3, Sr., Fort Dodge, Iowa / St. Edmond) went 6 of 11 from the field, including 2 of 5 from behind the arc on her way to collecting a team-high 18 points in Southwest Minnesota State’s 73-70 loss to South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Nagel was a perfect 4 of 4 from the charity stripe and pulled down three rebounds. The senior forward is averaging 17.0 points per game and 6.5 rebounds on the season. Nagel will lead SMSU into conference play when the Mustangs open the 22-game schedule on the road on Saturday, Nov. 30, versus Sioux Falls.
ST. CLOUD STATE - SCSU competed in two games this week. First, the Huskies traveled to Grand View University (Des Moines, IA) on Wednesday evening. Ahead by just eight at the half (40-32), Jessica Benson (Grand Meadow) went eight for ten shooting in the final twenty minutes, propelling the Huskies to lead by double-digits from the 12:00 mark on. Benson led all players with 25 points and 10 rebounds, marking her first double-double of the season. The Huskies triumphed over the Vikings of Grand View University in an 85-67 final score. The Huskies shot 56% from the field and made seven of 14 three-point attempts. Grand View finished the game shooting 48%. St. Cloud State won the rebounding battle 29-21. The Huskies scored 23 points off of Grand View turnovers. On Saturday, the Huskies welcomed the University of Wisconsin-Stout to Halenbeck Hall for a 2 p.m. tipoff. Rachael Moen (Savage) finished with 17 points to equal her career high. She also dished out a game high five assists. Benson continued to dominate against the Blue Devils as she posted another double double with 11 points, 14 rebounds and six steals. On the week, Benson combined for 24 rebounds, 36 points, and seven steals. After three games, Benson is averaging 18.1 ppg while shooting a team-high .523% from the field and pulling down an average 9.7 rpg. The Huskies improved to 3-0 and will host Dakota State University on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 7 p.m.
UPPER IOWA - The Upper Iowa women’s basketball team took a 13-point lead on the Cardinals of William Jewell College early in the first half in their only contest last week (Saturday). The team overcame 14 turnovers in the first half to hold a five-point lead at the break; however, 13 more giveaways in the second half proved to be too much to overcome. William Jewell rallied in Liberty, Mo. for the 85-74 victory. The Peacocks relied heavily on their size inside as Lauren Buck, Carly Pagel and Emily Gustafson combined for 36 points and 21 rebounds in the game. UIU’s largest lead of the game, 19-6, came at the 12:06 mark in the opening half. The Peacocks dominated the rebounding battle in the first half, 19-4. A 10-0 Cardinal run separated the teams midway through the second half and the home team’s lead grew to 15 at its largest point. Buck (15 points, 9 rebounds, 1 steal) and Pagel (14 points, 6 rebounds) led the Peacocks. Lindsay Carroll added 11 points, Sam Thrapp netted 8 point and handed out 7 assists and Whitney Kieffer scored 6. Upper Iowa will play one game this week following Thanksgiving; the Peacocks will welcome the Warriors of Winona State University to Dorman Gym on Saturday for a 4 p.m. tip.
WAYNE STATE - Jordan Spencer (F, 5-11, Jr., Millard West HS) led a balanced scoring attack with 17 points and nine rebounds last Wednesday evening in a 101-41 win over York College. Spencer was 7 of 11 from the field and 3 of 6 at the foul line in just 18 minutes of playing time. For the season, she leads the Wildcats in scoring at 20.0 points per game and also grabs 5.8 rebounds per contest.
WINONA STATE - Abby Busch, F, Sr., 5-10, Fairfax, Minn. (G-F-W) continued her strong start to the season, scoring 24 points in the Warriors’ win over Wisconsin-Stout on Thursday. Busch has now scored at least 21 points in all three games this season and is averaging 22 points per game. She was 6-of-14 from the floor against UW-Stout while also going 11-of-14 from the free throw line. Busch was also good on her lone 3-point attempt of the game while grabbing five rebounds, handing out two assists and making a steal.
