Schilling continued his strong play this weekend, averaging 24 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 3.5 steals. Schilling started off the weekend with a historic performance, becoming the first player to score 15 or more points and grab 15 or more rebounds in the same game at Augustana since Nov. 24, 2004. The sophomore scored 22 points and grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds to go along with five steals, four assists and two blocks leading Augustana to a 79-70 win over Concordia-St. Paul. Schilling followed that performance with a career-high 26 points, 11 rebounds and four assists against 17th-ranked Minnesota State on Saturday. Schilling has recorded three straight double-doubles and is averaging 23.3 points and 12.3 rebounds during that span. This marks the second time this season Schilling has been named NSIC Player of the Week (11/11/13).
2013-14 NSIC Men’s Basketball Notes
AUGUSTANA COLLEGE #32 Casey Schilling (F, 6-6, 190, So., Ellsworth, Minn./Ellsworth HS) continued his strong play this weekend, averaging 24 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists and 3.5 steals. BEMIDJI STATE - #3 Zach Noreen (F, 6-6, 250, Sr., Avon, Minn. / Albany HS) averaged 16.0 points and 5.0 rebounds per game in a 0-2 NSIC road weekend. He shot 50 percent from the field and added three steals. Noreen totaled 11 points and four rebounds before he recorded his fourth 20-point performance of the season Saturday at Northern State. He posted 21 points on 9-of-17 (52.9%) shooting from the field and added six rebounds with three steals.
The Bemidji State men’s basketball team went 0-2 in an NSIC road weekend Dec. 13-14. BSU lost 77-68 at MSU Moorhead and 75-59 at Northern State for its first back-to-back losses of the season. The Beavers are 6-3 overall and 3-2 in NSIC and will host Minnesota Crookston Dec. 20 at 8 p.m. to put a wrap the 2013 calendar year. Both senior Zach Noreen and junior Brock Lutes are averaging 16.9 points per game to sit tied for sixth in the NSIC. Senior Maxie Rosenbloom owns 10.4 rebounds per contest to lead the league. BSU has won 11 straight games against UMC, which includes a 78-63 victory in Crookston, Minn. Nov. 30.
CONCORDIA-ST. PAUL - Concordia junior point guard Terez VanPelt led the team with 15.5 points per game over the weekend and also added five assists and four steals ... he shot 18-25 at the foul line for a 72.0% weekend at the stripe ... Concordia dropped a pair of close contests on the road, falling 79-70 at Augustana before a 65-59 loss at Wayne State ... this weekend, Concordia completes a three game road swing to end the 2013 calendar year at nationally ranked Minnesota State to complete the season series ... Concordia fell 81-64 to the Mavericks on November 30 at Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul ... the Golden Bears have now dropped the last three games in the series against the Mavericks but the two teams have split the last six games ... MSU leads the all-time series 15-5 and is 8-2 against Concordia at Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn. ... Concordia has won two of the last three meetings with the Mavericks at Taylor Center, however.
UNIVERSITY OF MARY - Devan Douglas (G, 6-3, 210, Jr., Clinton, Iowa / Clinton / Kirkwood College) tied his career-high with 18 points in the University of Mary’s 72-65 loss at the University of Minnesota Duluth. The junior guard was a torrid from the field, draining 9-of-14 shots. He also yanked down a career-best six rebounds. Douglas wrapped up the weekend with seven points at St. Cloud State, making 3-of-4 shots. For the weekend the junior college transfer shot 67 per cent from the floor and averaged 12.5 points per game. For the season he is seventh in the NSIC in shooting percentage, connecting on 60.3 per cent of his attempts. After starting the last three games Douglas is averaging 10.3 points per game in his first season at U-Mary... The Marauders close out 2013 at home against Minot State University on Friday, Dec. 20. The game will be televised across western North Dakota on the NBC North Dakota Sports Network.
MINNESOTA CROOKSTON - The UMC men’s basketball team lost a pair on the road against Northern State and MSU Moorhead. The Golden Eagles fell 79-64 to NSU Friday. Tyler West, Jr. led UMC with a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds. Ashton Harrell added 10 points while Brandon Burns and Kevin Larson each had nine.
Saturday, the Golden Eagles put on the pressure early against MSU Moorhead, who came into the game undefeated. UMC led by as many as six in the first half and were within striking distance at the break down 46-38. However, MSU Moorhead would come out of the half on fire, hitting 10 three-pointers in the half to run away with the game 102-77. The Golden Eagles were led by 16 points from Tyler West and 15 from Tyler West. Brandon Burns chipped in 13 on the night.
The Golden Eagles will wrap up the 2013 part of their schedule, Fri., Dec. 20 as they head to Bemidji State University for a 8 p.m. meeting. The match-up will be their second and final meeting with BSU this season after already playing them to open up the season Nov. 30. UMC is currently 4-5 (1-4 NSIC) entering the weekend.
MINNESOTA DULUTH - UMD returned home after nearly a month on the road and brought the Romano Gym fans a pair of wins, first knocking off U-Mary 72-65 and then Minot State 81-74. As a squad, the Bulldogs shot 45.8 percent on the weekend and raised their season scoring average to 71.6 PPG. The usual suspects - top guards Jordan Reetz (Sr.), Peter Crawford (Sr.), and Reece Zoelle (Jr.) were on display, averaing 19.0, 17.0, and 14.0 points per game on the weekend, but got strong contributions from the bench as well. UMD’s reserves outscored U-Marys’ 19-7 on Friday night and out-scored both teams 36-32 on the weekend. Freshman forwards Charles Benson and Lane Olson split the starting duties inside and combined for 19 points and 19 rebounds on the weekend. Freshman point guard Justin Byrd had ten points, six assists, and seven boards on the weekend.
Senior guard Jordan Reetz continues to be the hot hand in UMD’s offense, shooting 57.7 percent on the weekend, averaging 19.0 points per game. He hauled in ten rebounds in two games and had seven assists compared to just one turnover. Reetz also made good on his opportunities at the charity stripe, shooting 83.3 percent on five of six for the weekend.
MINNESOTA STATE - #22 Zach Monaghan, G, 6-3, 180, Jr., Palatine, Ill./Fremd/South Dakota State) finished his week averaging a team-high 16 points in MSU’s two wins this past weekend. He shot 13-of-26 (.500) from the field, while averaging seven assists, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals per game. Against Wayne State, Monaghan posted 16 points, while shooting 6-of-10 from the field. He followed with a 16-point, nine-assist effort in MSU’s win over Augustana.
The Mavericks finished their week with a 2-0 record including wins at Wayne State (86-55) and Augustana (86-81). As a team, MSU shot 50% from the field and connected on 20-of-44 (.455) shots from beyond the arc. MSU brought down 77 rebounds, compared to its opponents 59. Five Mavericks averaged at least 10 points in MSU’s two wins this past weekend, including Zach Monaghan who averaged a team-high 16 points per game. Senior Tanner Adler finished his weekend averaging 12 points and a team-high six rebounds per game.
MSU MOORHEAD - Jordan Riewer (G, 6-1, Jr., Staples, Minn. / Staples-Motley HS) had a solid week to help the Dragon men improve to 9-0 with a pair of home wins. For the week, the junior point guard averaged 14.5 points and 5.0 assists per game while shooting 62.5 percent (10-of-16) from the field, including 70 percent (7-of-10) from three-point range. Riewer had 16 points and three assists in a 77-68 home win over Bemidji State on Friday. Riewer was 6-of-10 from the field, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. The next night ,he followed with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting and also tied a season-high with seven assists in a 102-77 win over Minnesota Crookston. Riewer leads a balanced Dragon attack at 11.0 points per game and also has a team-best 35 assists.
MINOT STATE - Minot State University couldn’t get consistent play on the defensive end and fell twice on the road, losing 97-73 at St. Cloud State and 81 at Minnesota Duluth in NSIC play this weekend. The Beavers have lost four straight games after winning its first five to start the season. In its five NSIC contests, Minot State has given up 80-plus points in four, losing three of those. #0 Samuel Johnson (F, 6-6, 200, Sr., Las Vegas, Nev. / Legacy / Montana State-Billings) was solid on offense on the weekend for MISU, combining for 28 points and 14 rebounds, leading the Beavers Saturday at UMD with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Minot State also got a boost off the bench from #21 Lazar Boskovic (F, 6-10, 220, Jr., Belgrade, Serbia / Zemun Electric Engineering School), who has been sidelined with an injury. Boskovic scored a season-high 14 points against SCSU and finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds and three assists. MISU finishes a three-game road swing with a single game Friday at rival University of Mary.
NORTHERN STATE - Trent Zomer (Sr., F, Melbourne, Australia) had a huge weekend leading the Wolves to a pair of wins over Minnesota, Crookston and Bemidji State to propel NSU to its fourth-straight win in conference play. Zomer averaged 19 points and 10.5 rebounds per game over the weekend while shooting an incredible 15-for-23 from the floor (65 percent). Zomer also had four assists, two steals and a block in the two wins. Against UMC, Zomer recorded career-highs in points with 24 and rebounds with 14. It was Zomer’s first career double-double with Northern. Zomer followed that up with a 14-point, 7-rebound performance against the Beavers, going 5-for-6 from the field. Trent also shot 80 percent from the charity stripe.
SIOUX FALLS - The University of Sioux Falls men’s squad (5-4, 2-3 NSIC) played resilient basketball this weekend, but the Cougars’ efforts weren’t quite enough as they dropped a pair of road contests and Winona State and Upper Iowa. Friday night saw four Cougars in double-digits, led by Charles Ward’s 18 point outing, but USF didn’t match up well in terms of size and Winona State handled the Cougars 90-65. The Warriors dominated the glass, 41-27, led 43-30 at the break and opened the second half on a 10-0 spurt to ensure that the visitors didn’t get within ten the rest of the way. Saturday was a different story but had the same ending for the Cougars. USF trailed the Peacocks 65-43 at the 15:13 mark of the second half, used a 31-9 run over a 13 minute span to tie the game at 74. Robert Goffney’s straight-away three put USF in front 79-78, but the Peacocks (4-7, 2-3) quickly regained the lead and made a parade of free throws to seal the victory. Jordan Stotts carried the Cougars in the second-half, scoring 32 of his career-high 34 points after the break. The sophomore forward finished 11-for-14 from the floor, 4-for-6 from deep and went 8-for-11 at the stripe. His 34-point outing is the most points scored by a Cougar player since Jan. 11, 2011 (Eric Tisby, 37). Goffney finished with 15 points (6-for-6 FT) while Derek Brown (11) and Mahlon Jones (10) rounded out the Cougars with double-digit efforts. USF looks to snap its three-game losing streak next Saturday at Southwest Minnesota State (5-5, 3-2).
SMSU - Redshirt freshman forward Joey Bartlett (6-5, St. Peter, Minn.) averaged 14.5 points, while shooting 50 percent (9 of 18) from the field and 54.5 percent (6 of 11) from 3-point range in SMSU’s two-game road split last weekend. He also averaged 2.5 rebounds and recorded three steals and three blocked shots. Bartlett scored a career-high 17 points on 6 of 10 shooting with four 3-pointers in SMSU’s 83-73 win over Upper Iowa. In SMSU’s loss to Winona State on Saturday, Bartlett scored 12 points with a pair of 3-pointers.
ST. CLOUD STATE - St. Cloud State swept a home NSIC series and improved to 8-1 overall with wins over Minot, 97-73 and Mary, 80-55. The Huskies are 6-0 at home this season. Kevin Levandoski (Jr., G, Appleton, Wis.) scored a season high 23 points in the win over Minot State. He tallied 31 points, nine assists and six steals over the weekend. Jordan Poydras (So., G, De Pere, Wis.) dished out a career high seven assists against Mary. He knocked down 22 points against Minot and finished the weekend with 33 points. Chris Larson (Sr., C, Hudson, Iowa) scored a season high ten points and for the second time this season and third time in his career had five blocked shots. He finished the weekend with nine blocks. The Huskies will close out the year at Minnesota Duluth on Saturday. Earlier this season the Huskies defeated the Bulldogs 86-65 in the NSIC opener. The Huskies have won seven straight over the Bulldogs and lead the all-time series 52-30.
UPPER IOWA - Joey Woods (G, 6-2, 210, R-Sr., Naples, Fla./Golden Gate HS) averaged 19.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 7 assists and 3.5 steals this past weekend for UIU as the team earned a split at home against SMSU and USF. Woods hit 50-percent of his field goal attempts going 13-for-26 from the floor, while connecting on 92-percent of his free throws (13-of-14). On Friday night, the redshirt-senior had 20 points against the Mustang defense – 11 of which came in the second half as he hit 4-of-5 field goals in a losing effort. A night later against USF, Woods earned a team-high 19 points on 6-of-13 shooting adding 7 assists and a career-high 5 steals. Woods made seven total trips to the free throw line and connected on all of them, including six in the final 6:47 of regulation to seal a 96-87 victory.
Despite Woods and Josh Weeber (C, Fr., 6-5, 215, Dubuque, Ia./Senior HS) combining for 39 points, the Peacocks couldn’t keep up with the red-hot shooting Mustangs of SMSU in the second period on Friday night. SMSU outscored the Peacocks by eight in the final 20 minutes thanks to an astonishing 72-percent shooting clip as they took the 83-73 NSIC victory in Dorman Gym. UIU bounced back a night later as they jumped out to a 14-point lead at halftime against USF, 43-29, and extended that lead to a game-high 22 points five minutes into the second half. The Cougars mounted a frantic comeback eventually tying the game at 74-74 with seven minutes to play. Former USF guard, Grant Lang (G, 6-4, 195, Jr. Ankeny, Iowa/Akeny HS) sealed the win for UIU as he hit his second three of the game with 1:20 to play to put UIU up by five. Lang finished with 16 points as the Peacocks held on for a 96-87 victory to ensure a weekend split. The Peacocks will round out 2013 competition this Saturday in Minnesota as they face the Warriors of Winona State at 6 p.m.
WAYNE STATE - Ty Bauschek, 6-1 senior guard from Mukwonago, Wisconsin, scored a career-high 29 points Saturday evening to lead the Wayne State men in a 65-59 win over Concordia-St. Paul for the Wildcats’ first NSIC win of the season. Bauschek was 7 of 12 from the field (4 for 7 from the 3-point line) and 11 of 12 at the free throw line, including four straight free throws in the final 16 seconds, that sealed the win. It was Bauschek’s third 20-point game of the season.
Sophomore guard Jamie Pearson had a stellar weekend for the Wildcats with games of 15 and 13 points against Minnesota State and Concordia-St. Paul. For the weekend, Pearson was 9 for 20 from the field and 7 of 8 at the free throw line.
WINONA STATE - Taylor Cameron, G, Sr., 6-5, 200, Oshkosh, Wis. (North) led Winona State to a pair of conference victories this weekend, averaging 17.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists in wins over Sioux Falls and Southwest Minnesota State. Cameron shot the ball extremely well, shooting 50 percent (11-of-22) from the floor and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from behind the 3-point line. The senior began the weekend by scoring 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting in just 26 minutes to beat USF. Cameron added four rebounds and four assists in the victory. He followed with 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting the next night against SMSU, again grabbing four rebounds and four assists in the matchup. He also posted a pair of steals and blocked a shot against the Mustangs. Cameron hit four 3-pointers in each game while making all four of his free throw attempts on the weekend.
