Vikings take down USF 6-0 in first round of NSIC tournament

MINNETONKA, Minn. – Augustana opened its Northern Sun intercollegiate Conference tennis tournament title defense with a 6-0 defeat of cross-town rival University of Sioux Falls.  The Vikings improve to 19-2 on the season while the Cougars’ season ends at 7-10.
 
The Vikings opened the match by cruising to three doubles victories, allowing the Cougars no more than three games in any set.
 
Katie Jesperson and Michelle Wadas won 8-1 at the top spot, Jessa Richards and Hannah Gebauer took the No. 2 match 8-3, and the tandem of Heather Sullivan and Jenna Helleberg won 8-1 at the third doubles flight.
 
The Vikings carried their domination over to the singles matches, winning the first three in quick fashion and won the match. 
 
Jesperson won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and Jessa Richards chalked-up a double-bagel victory at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.  Heather Sullivan was the last Viking to complete her match and won 6-0, 6-0, giving Augustana its 6-0 team win.
 
Wadas, Gebauer, and Helleberg each won their first set, but did not need to complete their matches.
 
The Vikings will face Minnesota State in the semifinals tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
