Minnetonka, Minn. --- The Minnesota State women’s tennis team opened the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament Saturday evening with a 5-2 win over Northern State.
With the win the, Mavericks improved to 11-8 on the season, while the Wolves ended their season with a 9-5 record.
MSU began the day winning two of the three doubles matches.
The pairing of freshman
Sarah McCann and junior
Alexis Ronney earned an 8-6 win over the pairing of Jamie Voelker and Valerie Robinson in the second doubles match. The duo of senior
Brandi Dohmen and sophomore
Shealyn Bakke claimed the No. 1 doubles match 8-5 over the pairing of Deanie Hatch and Jamie Golden.
The Mavericks finished off the Wolves as they claimed three of the first four completed singles matches to secure the 5-2 win.
Freshman
Kelly Lechowski won the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-2, while Dohmen followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 1 singles match. NSU’s Voelker won the No.5 singles match 6-3, 6-2, before MSU’s Bakke secured the dual for the Mavericks with a 6-4, 6-3 win in the No. 4 singles match. The No. 3 and No. 6 singles matches went unfinished.
Minnesota State takes on Augustana in the second round of the NSIC Tournament Sunday, at 8 a.m. Should MSU defeat the Vikings, the Mavericks would take on the winner of the dual between Winona State and St. Cloud at 12 p.m.
