No. 3 Minnesota State takes on Winona State Thursday on National Stage
No. 3 Minnesota State (5-0) will travel to Winona State Thursday for a nationally televised game on CBS Sports Network (Channel Finder).  The game will also be aired on Midco Sports Network and HBC Cable in Winona.
NSIC Offensive  Player of the Week
#6  Jared Jacobson  (QB, 5-11, 200, Sr.,  Rapid City, S.D. / St. Thomas More HS )
Northern State University


Jacobson threw a career-high five touchdowns Saturday in Northern State’s 42-14 win over Minot State on Gypsy Days. Jacobson went 20-for-30 through the air for 260 yards while also adding 84 yards rushing in the victory. The 344 yards of total offense was a season-high for Jacobson and the second highest total in the NSIC last week.  

NSIC Defensive  Player of the Week
#5 Javon Moore (DB, 6-0, 170, Sr., Newark, N.J. / Union HS)
Upper Iowa University


Moore was all over the field for the Peacocks in a 31-25 come-from-behind win over Augustana.  Moore intercepted three passes, including one in the end zone with a minute to play to seal the win.  Moore also added nine solo tackles and broke up two addition passes for five defended in the game.  UIU is 5-0 for the first time since 1964, when the Peacocks started 6-0 on their way to an 8-1 season.  

NSIC Special teams Player of the Week
#88 Austin Rieder (WR, 5-11, 180, Sr.,  Eau Claire, Wis. North )
Minnesota State University, Mankato


Rieder returned three punts for 94 yards in the Mavericks 56-14 homecoming win over Southwest Minnesota State.  He took one punt 67 yards for a touchdown with 24 second left in the second quarter to put the Mavericks up 35-0 at intermission.  MSU has now won 27 straight NSIC contests as it improved to 13-0 all-time against the Mustangs.

- Augie will host inter city rival University of Sioux Falls in Key for City game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
- USF has won two straight over Augustana but trail the all-time series 18-4.
- The first ever meeting in 1916 was a 46-0 USF win. After a long 26-year break in the series, USF defeated Augustana, 32-31 in 2012. A year ago, USF won again, 27-10.

- Sophomore quarterback Drew Bauer became the first Bulldog to throw and run for a touchdown and also catch a scoring pass in the same game this past Saturday night.
- Junior running back Logan Lauters led all rushers Saturay with 107 yards. That was his fourth 100-yard outing of 2014 and shot him past the 2,000-yard career rushing barrier.
- With the Bulldog defensive secondary a bit depleted due to injuries, senior Aaron Roth was switched from his usual wide out position to defensive back. Roth, who has played in all 44 games over the past four seasons (the only Bulldog to so so) was credited with two solo tackles.

- UMD will make its 2014 NSIC North Divison North Division road debut with an afternoon bout against longtime intrastate rival St. Cloud State.
- With Saturday’s 63-28 throttling of MSU-Moorhead, the Bulldogs are now 37-2 lifetime in NSIC North Division play, going a perfect 20-0 at home
- The 5-0 Bulldogs have now won 13 straight regular season games going back to last fall (a 21-17 home loss to Minnesota State)

MSUM and Northern State will meet for a 52nd time with the Wolves holding a 28-22-1 series lead. MSUM ended a four-game losing streak against the Wolves with a thrilling 47-46 win over Northern State last season. The Dragons took the lead with a late touchdown by Zayne Medhaug and two-point conversion by Jake Hodge, and linebacker Nick Seedorff intercepted a pass in the final minutes to secure the MSUM win.

- Minot State extended its losing streak to five games as the Beavers gave up 14 points in the early part of each of the first and third quarters.
- Beavers continued to struggle running the ball, finishing with just 57 yards rushing – which marked the season-high for MSU.
- #82 Porter Sturm (WR, 6-2, 185, Jr., Roy, Mont. / Roy) became only the second wide receiver for the Beavers to catch a touchdown pass as he ended up with two. He finished with six catches for 77 yards and the two TDs.
- #9 Leon La Deaux (WR, 6-3, 200, Sr., Port Orchard, Wash. / South Kitsap / Central Washington) caught a team-high seven passes for 79 yards, including a 47-yard pass to set up Sturm’s first touchdown. La Deaux finished with 162 total yards on the day.
- #16 Zac Cunha (QB, 6-3, 234, Jr., Rocklin, Calif. / Roseville) threw two TDs, pushing his season total to five and finished with 236 yards passing.
- #21 Troy Garland (DB, 5-10, 170, Jr., Jersey City, N.J. . Marist) led the Beavers with a season-high eight tackles, including one for a loss. He sits in seventh on the Beavers with 22 total tackles.
 
THIS WEEK - vs U-MARY
- Minot State looks to hoist the “Battle for the Big Lake” trophy for the first time in the short two-year history of the series.
- The Beavers and Marauders began their series in 1988 when both were members of the NAIA and the DAC-10. The series is tied at 11 wins each with each team winning once on their home turf since MSU moved to the NSIC.

- recorded a career-best 1.5 sacks
- tallied five total stops in the game
- both of Alberts’ sacks came in the third quarter and totaled a loss 14 yards overall.
 THIS WEEK - at MSUM
- NSU is 27-21-1 all-time against MSU Moorhead
- The Dragons defeated the Wolves 47-46 last season in Aberdeen. The two teams combined for over 1,100 yards of total offense in the game in 2013
- The Wolves are 3-1 against Moorhead under Head Coach Tom Dosch
- NSU quarterback Jared Jacobson now has 7,862 yards of total offense in his career

 #3 Nephi Garcia, RB, 5-7, 185, Sr., Palm Desert, Calif.
- Rushed 24 times for a season-high 146 yards with a TD run (one yard) and TD reception (nine yards) in a 38-9 win over Concordia-St. Paul on USF’s homecoming. He now has 10 TDs this season on the ground (2nd in the NSIC) and 11 overall. Garcia caught a nine-yard scoring pass from Luke Papilion with 13:09 left in the third quarter and scored on a one-yard run at 9:44 of the fourth quarter.
- With the 146 yards rushing, Garcia now has 10 career 100-yard rushing games, including three in five games this season. With his yardage against CU, Garcia has 318 carries for 1,600 yards and 20 rushing TDs in his career.
 #69 Evan Gentry, DE, 6-3, 250, So., Tallahassee, Fla. (North Florida Christian)    - Recorded six tackles, including four tackles for loss, as #21 USF moved to 5-0 (5-0, 1-0 NSIC South ) with a 31-9 win over Concordia, St. Paul.
- Part of a defense that did not allow a TD, just three field goals and 249 yards in total offense
- Gentry’s four TFLs gives him 12.5 on the season, which leads the NSIC and ranks in the top 10 nationally.
THIS WEEK - at AUGIE
- #21 University of Sioux Falls (5-0) will face Augustana (3-2) in Key for City game on Saturday at 1 p.m. USF owns a 2-0 road record with a combined 125-to-40 scoring differential in the two road wins at MSU Moorhead (73-21) and Bemidji State (52-19).
- USF has won two straight over Augustana but trail the all-time series 18-4. The first ever meeting in 1916 was a 46-0 USF win. After a long 26-year break in the series, USF defeated Augustana, 32-31 in 2012. A year ago, USF won again, 27-10, when Nephi Garcia rushed for 159 yards and three TDs to lead the way at Bob Young Field.
- Last week, USF moved into both DII national polls for the first time. The Cougars moved up from #24 to #21 in the AFCA poll and jumped into the D2football.com poll at #23.
- USF, the league’s most productive offense at 504.4 total yards per game, had 468 yards in total offense against a Concordia, St. Paul defense, including 287 through the air.  USF now has totaled at least 400 yards in total offense in five straight games.
- USF improved to 48-3 at Bob Young Field after winning Saturday. USF is 3-0 at home this season, sporting a 240-to-63 over ppg differential. The Cougars have won every game by at least 27 points.
- The Cougars are 5-0 for the first time since 2010 when they advanced to the NAIA title game in a 13-1 season.
- USF is winning the first and fourth quarters with an overall 154-3 margin. While they trailed for the first time all season against CU (3-0, 1st quarter), the Cougars have a 70-3 advantage over opponents in the first quarter.  In the 4th quarter, USF has a 84-0 points advantage.
- In league stats, USF is second in scoring (48.0 ppg), second in scoring defense (12.6 ppg), second in turnover margin (1.60, 16-to-8), third in passing defense (169.4), second in rushing defense (111.2) and second in total defense (280.6).

Junior running back Davontay Stevens, 5-7, 205, Jacksonsville, Fla. (Wolfson HS/Ridgewater College)
-Rushed for a team-high 91 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries in SMSU’s loss at Minnesota State.
-Also caught four passes for 24 yards.
-Ranks second on the team this season with 242 yards rushing on 39 carries.

Junior linebacker Alex Burton, 6-0, 244, Savage, Minn. (Burnsville HS)
-Recorded a team-high seven tackles, including three solo and one for loss in SMSU’s loss at Minnesota State.

-SMSU has won six straight over UIU
-the two teams have played two overtime games since 2006
-in seven of the last eight games between the two teams, the average point differential is 4.7 points per game. The last four SMSU wins have been by a total of 15 points.

Last Week - at UMC - W 45-24
Kenneth Walker (So., RB/Retuns, Walworth, Wis.) rolled to 252 all-purpose yards in the Huskies 45-24 win over Minnesota Crookston. Walker rushed for a personal career high 145 yards on 20 carries and scored one touchdown on a run of 20 yards. He caught two passes for 13 yards. He had four kick returns for 93 yards with a long return of 38 yards. This season he is averaging 21.6 yards per kick return. He also had one punt return for one yard. He currently ranks second in the NSIC standings in all-purpose yards, averaging 161.4 yards per game.
St. Cloud State scored 28 second half points and posted its first road win of the season with a 45-24 victory over Minnesota Crookston in an NSIC North Division game on Saturday. The Huskies are 11-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles dating back to the 2003 season.
Three Huskies, Nate Meyer (So., QB, Cold Spring, Minn),  Ledell White  (Jr., RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) and Kenneth Walker (So., RB, Walworth, Wis.) rushed for over 100 yards in the game. It marked the first time since the 2012 season that at least two Huskies rushed for 100 yards in the same game. The last two players to accomplish the feat were White and Michael Walker on Nov. 3, 2012 against Minot State. Taking a look at the record book since 1986, it the first recollection of three players going over 100 yards in the same game.
Adam Josephson (So., LB, Minneota, Minn.) led SCSU with eight tackles.
The Huskies gained a season high 520 yards of total offense with 394 coming on the ground.
THIS WEEK - vs UMD
The Huskies will host #4 Minnesota Duluth next Saturday at Husky Stadium. In one of the Huskies oldest rivalries, dating back to 1933, St. Cloud State holds a 24-22 advantage over the Bulldogs in the series. The Huskies have won two of the last three meetings. The last time these two teams met in St. Cloud in 2012, Phillip Klaphake hit Michael Walker on an eight-yard pass play as time ran out to cap a 51-49 come from behind victory over the #2 Bulldogs in front of 4,500 fans.

The Winona State football team opened NSIC South play with a tough loss, suffering a 27-7 setback to Wayne State Saturday afternoon in Wayne.
Alan May was the Warriors’ top receiving target, hauling in six passes for 73 yards and the team’s lone touchdown pass.
Defensively, the Warriors were able to pick off Wildcat quarterback Zach Osborn three times.  Mitch Lunder, Andrew Spencer and Anthony Catanese each recorded interceptions for WSU.  Larry Mbayu and Jarrett Wood each were credited with 10 tackles.

THIS WEEK - vs MSU - Thursday on CBS Sports Network
Winona State (3-2) now has a short week to prepare for No. 3 Minnesota State, which comes to Winona Thursday night for a nationally televised battle under the lights at Warrior Stadium.  Kickoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
The Mavericks own a 34-17 advantage in the series with four ties.  WSU and MSU have met 55 times in series history.  Minnesota State has won the last three matchups in the series, with the Warriors’ last win coming on October 2, 2010 when Winona State knocked off the No. 25 Mavericks 43-21 in a home night game.
