NSIC Offensive  Player of the Week
#19 Jack Nelson (QB, 6-4, 225, So.,, Byron, Minn. / Byron HS)
Winona State University


Nelson was phenomenal in the Warriors 42-34 win over the University of Mary.  Nelson went 30 of 45 (67%) for 422 yards and three touchdowns.  The 422 yards were the third most passing in WSU history.  Nelson distributed the ball to five different receivers, with every pass catcher picking up at least 50 yards.  He also rushed for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to put the Warriors up 35-28.  Nelson becomes the first quarterback in Winona State history to record multiple 400-yard passing games as he also threw for 425 yards in 2013 vs. Southwest Minnesota State.


NSIC Defensive  Player of the Week
#27 Joe Parsley (S, 6-1, 195, So., Flandreau, S.D. / Flandreau HS)
Northern State University


Parsley was a game changer in the fourth quarter as Northern State rallied to beat Concordia-St. Paul 28-21.  Parsley returned an interception 80 yards for NSU’s game-winning touchdown with 6:15 to play as the Wolves trailed 21-20 with CU driving into Wolves territory.  Later in the quarter, Parsley broke-up the Golden Bears’ fourth down passing attempt inside the Wolves 10-yard line with under a minute to play to seal the 28-21 victory.  Parsley added five total tackles in the win from his safety position.  


NSIC Special teams Player of the Week
#23 Mike Wenk (K/P, 6-0, 205, Sr.,  Hartford, S.D. / West Central HS)
Southwest Minnesota State University


Mike Wenk-kicked three field goals, including tying a career-high with a 42-yarder, as SMSU defeated Minnesota Crookston 56-31.  His other two field goals were from 22 yards out as he becomes the first SMSU kicker since 2007 to hit three field goals in a game.  Wenk also punted two times for 90 yards, including a 55 yarder.

The Beavers, 0-2 overall and 0-2 in NSIC play, return to action Saturday with a trip to Fayette, Iowa for a 6 p.m. interdivisional match up with Upper Iowa University. The Beavers will attempt to avoid going 0-3 to open the season for the first time since 2002 and just the third time in 19 seasons under Head Coach Jeff Tesch.

- Set a school record with an 89 yard punt return for a touchdown

- The all-NSIC WR/KR had three catches for 32 yards and a touchdown
- Leads the NSIC in punt return average (25.8 yards/return) and all-purpose yardage (210 yards/game) and is third in kickoff return average (26.3 yards/return)
- He has returned punts for touchdowns twice in his career
Nick Joliffe (WR, 6-2, 190, Sr., Bismarck, N.D. / Bismarck)
- Caught nine passes for 98 yards and a touchdown
- All his catches came on throws from his younger brother, R-Fr. Ben Jolliffe, who was making his first career start.
- Has caught touchdown passed in three straight games and in 10 of 13
- Troy Guptill posted 2.5 sacks against WSU and has 20 in his career.
- Austin Bolton’s 57 yard fumble return for a touchdown is the second longest in the Marauders NCAA era to an 85 yard Shawn Melland return.

- The Marauders are 3-2 against Concordia – St. Paul, including wins in the last two meetings, both at CU (32-26 in 2012 and 27-7 in 2009).

# 2 Beau Bofferding (WR, 5-8, 180, So., Marshall, Minn.)
- Caught a career-high 10 passes (the eighth highest single-season total in program history) for 105 yards and one touchdown
- Hauled in six of those balls and generated 80 yards and one score during the fourth quarter while helping the Bulldogs erase a 16-6 deficit, force overtime and ultimately win 23-22 in the extra sessions.
- Also tacked on eight yards on three carries
- Became the first Bulldog in six years to reach double figures for pass receptions in one game.
#51 Gavin Grady (LB, 6-3, 240, Sr, Minnetonka, Minn.)
- Was in on a team-high and a personal-best 12 total tackles
- Registered 1.5 stops for a loss
- anchored a UMD club that held Augie to just 40 yards rushing on 34 attempts.
# 15 Shawn Magee (P, 6-4, 205, Fr, Rice Lake, Wis.)
- Punted six times for a 36.2 average
- Had two punts over 50 yards, including a 58-yarder and placed two punts inside the 20-yard line
- Also ran 45 yards off a fake punt on a 4th-and-8 situation from the UMD 13 yard line on the final play of the first quarter. That kept a alive a drive that eventually led to a Bulldog field goal and a 6-0 UMD lead.
  THIS WEEK - vs SMSU
- UMD is 26-5-1 with SMSU, including 7 straight wins
14-9 to them at Malosky Stadium in 1999.
- It will be the Mustangs’ first visit to Duluth since 2008.
- Since falling 37-27 to Concordia-St. Paul back on Oct. 7, 2000,  UMD has gone 45-1 in NSIC games at Malosky Stadium.

- The MSU offense accounted for 611 yards of total offense.
- MSU tallied 350 rushing yards, with junior Connor Thomas leading the team with 89 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

 With its win over MSU Moorhead, the Mavericks are now 2-0 on the season and have won 24 straight NSIC games dating back to week one of the 2012 season.

- Dropped to 0-2 all time against Upper Iowa as the Beavers allowed a season-high 49 points and a total of 489 yards off offense to the Peacocks. Minot State has allowed an average of 45.0 points per game over the first two weeks.
- Despite the lopsided score, owned a 36:30-23:30 advantage in time of possession partly thanks to a 16-play, 8 minutes, 28 second drive culminating in the Beavers only points, a 27-yard field goal by #19 Brian Gutierrez (K, 5-10, 228, Sr., Granada Hills, Calif. / Birmingham) in the second quarter.
#12 Crosby Jensen (QB, 6-1, 215, So., Salt Lake City, Utah / Cottonwood)
- completed 15-of-29 passes for 150 yards and two INTs in his Beavers’ debut.

- Minot State takes its first trip to Blakeslee Stadium and plays MSU for only the second time in school history. MSU topped Minot State 44-10 in the first ever NSIC game for the Beavers
- The Beavers have just three road wins over the past three seasons and have just two road wins while a member of the NSIC.

- Northern returns home next weekend to face in-state rival Augustana at Swisher Field. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m.
- Augustana leads the all-time series 27-6-1.
- The last time the Wolves defeated Augie was back in 2003. In the two’s last meeting, Augustana won 35-14 back in 2012 in Sioux Falls.
- NSU quarterback Jared Jacobson rushed for 153 yards in the loss.
- The Wolves are coming off a 28-21 come-from-behind victory over Concordia-St. Paul last week.

- Recorded his eighth career 100-yard rushing game by going for 134 yards on 25 carries for three TDs to lead an offense that generated 447 yards
- had 176 all purpose yards, including a 29 yard punt return that he nearly broke for a TD.
- recorded his 10th straight game of at least 80 yards or more rushing.
- recorded 3 TDs rushing for the second time in his career at USF. He also had three against Augustana last Oct. 26, 2013.
#32 Cameron Ostrom, LB, 6-1, 210, Jr., Buffalo, Wyo.
- Returned an interception 88-yards for a TD to help lead USF to a 52-19 win on the road over Bemidji State on Saturday.   
- Ostrom was part a defense that recorded three defensive scores, which has happened for the first time in more than 12 years. The Cougars defense forced six turnovers, including four interceptions. In two games, Ostrom and his mates have limited opponents to 82 rushing yards on 63 carries.
-Ostrom recorded five tackles including 1.5 tackles for loss.
 #20 Bradley Hatfield, K, 5-11, 185, Sr., Manteca, Calif. )
- converted 5-of-6 PATs and knocked in 20 yard field goal attempt
- He averaged 63.7 yards on nine kickoffs covering 573 yards. His net yards per kickoff was 43.7 and had seven touchbacks.
 THIS WEEK - vs SCSU
- The Cougars, 17-7 all-time in the NSIC and 47-3 at Bob Young Field, own a 1-0 series record against the Huskies. In 2012, the Cougars recorded a 32-19 win over St. Cloud State in the season opener. It was the first win by USF as an NSIC member and in NCAA DII.  Interestingly, the Cougars’ first score in NCAA DII was a safety, recorded in the first quarter against the Huskies.

- The win was the seventh straight at Husky Stadium for the Huskies. - The Huskies are 42-14 all-time at Husky Stadium
Kenneth Walker (So., RB, Walworth, Wis.)
- scored 3 TDs on runs of five, ten and 42 yards. He finished the game with seven carries for 76 yards. He also had three punt returns for 68 yards and three kick-off returns for 62 yards. His five-yard run in the second quarter gave the Huskies a 16-6 lead going into the half.
- Huskies gained yards on the ground attack and finished the game with 342 yards of total offense
- Nate Meyer (So., QB, Cold Spring, Minn.), Jameson Parsons (So., QB, Eagan, Minn.) and McKinley Anderson (RFY, QB, Hutchinson, Minn.) all went under center for the Huskies. The last time three quarterbacks played in a game for SCSU was in October of 2009.
- Parsons rushed nine times for a career high 98 yards and one touchdown. He also completed two of two pass attempts for 28 yards.
- Grant Thayer (Jr., TE, Appleton, Wis.) caught a team high three passes for 53 yards.
- Carvel Graham (RFY, SS, Kenosha, Wis.) led the defense with a career high nine tackles. He had seven solo stops and one pass break-up
- Kyle Risinger (Sr., FS, Excelsior, Minn.) had eight tackles, all solo
Keyshawn Davis (RFY, CB, Milwaukee, Wis.)
- Intercepted two passes, had two pass break-ups and finished the game with five tackles
- His second interception led to the Huskies sixth score of the game

- The Huskies are 0-1 against the Cougars, losing to USF in the Huskies 2012 season opener, 32-19.

- Cole Jaeschke threw for 255 yards and 2 TD’s

- After two weeks, WSC is the most penalized football team in the NSIC with 19 flags for 164 yards.

#19 Jack Nelson (QB, 6-4, 225, So., Byron, Minn./Byron HS)
-    Threw for 339 yards and three touchdowns in just the first half alone while building his team a 28-14 lead en route to a 42-34 win over Mary.
-    Finished the day with a phenomenal 422 yards through the air – the third-most passing yards in WSU history – and four total touchdowns (one rushing score).
-    Became the first quarterback in Winona State history to record multiple 400-yard passing games (threw for 425 yards in 2013 vs. Southwest Minnesota State).
-    Completed 67 percent of his throws (30-for-45) while distributing the ball to five different receivers, with every pass catcher picking up at least 50 yards.

THIS WEEK - at UMC
Winona State (2-0) gets back on the road for a 1 p.m. matchup with Minnesota Crookston Saturday.  The Warriors have never lost a game against the Golden Eagles, going 12-0 in the series that began in 1999. The two teams last met in 2012, a game WSU won 58-6.  The last time they played in Crookston was in 2008, a game WSU won 50-26.
