NSIC Offensive  Player of the Week
#21 Chris Smith (RB, 5-8, 195, Sr., Brown Deer, Wis./Brown Deer HS)
Upper Iowa University


Smith rushed for the fifth highest single game total in Peacock history as he carried the ball 34 times for 247 yards and three touchdowns in a 47-30 win over Bemidji State. Smith set another Peacock record when he broke loose for a 99-yard score in the second quarter.  Smith has now rushed for over 200 yards seven times in his career and he broke the UIU record for career touchdowns as he now stands at 36 in his career.  Smith also has scored the second-most touchdowns in the nation this season (10). The Peacocks are 3-0 for the first time since 1990.


NSIC Defensive  Player of the Week
#42 Ben Skelly (LB, 6-1, 205, Sr., Lakeville, Minn./North HS)
Augustana College


Skelly was all over the field in a Vikings 48-17 win at Northern State.  He had a team high nine stops, including a career high 3.5 for a loss.  He also posted a career high two sacks, forced a fumble and intercepted a pass late in the first quarter and returned it six yards.


NSIC Special teams Player of the Week
#18  Alden Haffar  (K, 5-10, 205, Jr.,  West Des Moines, Iowa / West Des Moines HS)
 Minnesota State University, Mankato


Haffar went 3-of-3 in field goal attempts from 28, 51 and 46 yards out with the 51-yarder matching his season long.  He also went 7-of-7 in extra point attempts and finished the game with 16 points as the Mavericks defeated Minot State 58-0.  He also tallied six touchbacks and averaged 58.4 yards per kickoff.

The Beavers, 0-3, return to action Saturday when they host Minnesota State University, Mankato for a 1 p.m. interdivisional match up at Chet Anderson Stadium. The Beavers will attempt to avoid going 0-4 to open the season for the first time since 1996, the second time in 19 seasons under Head Coach Jeff Tesch and the 12th time in the 89 seasons of BSU football.

- The NSIC tackles leader has posted double digit totals in all three games this season
- Helped the Marauders hold Concordia-St. Paul to 241 total yards, U-Mary’s best mark since limiting MSU Moorhead to 225 yards on Oct. 20, 2012.
Troy Guptil (DE, 6-2, 235, Sr., Quinn. S.D. / Phillip)
- Became the Marauders career leader in tackles for loss at 41.5 with a fourth quarter sack. John Oyloe had the old mark with 41.
- Posted 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack in the U-Mary 20-13 win over CU

- Second in the NSIC in total yards, Elby Pope caught five passes for 55 yards and a score, ran twice for 10 yards and returned one punt for 24 yards against CSP.
- Three Marauders ran for over 50 yards apiece: Adam Woroniecki (56), Vince Ferrante (54) and Dariouse Gravely (52).

- U-Mary is 2-2 against upcoming foe Augustana
- The Marauders have won their last two meetings with the Vikings, a 32-25 decision in 2012 and a 10-0 win in 2011. Both games were played in Bismarck, N.D.
- The Marauders have played the Vikings just once on the road, a 52-21 loss in 2010.

- Rushed 18 times for 154 yards and a TD in three quarters of work
- Scored UMD’s first touchdown on its second play from scrimmage
- Was one of three UMD rushers to eclipse the 100-yard barrier in the Bulldogs 38-7 takedown of Southwest Minnesota State
- Now has seven 100-yard rushing days to his collegiate credit including two in three outings this fall
- is averaging an impressive 8.6 yards per carry this fall.

- The Bulldogs are averaging 311.0 yards per game thus far in 2014 (they rolled up a season-high 462 Saturday against SMSU) while holding the opposition to 98.3 yards via the run.
- Senior cornerback Daryl Brown registered the Bulldogs’ first interception of the year during the second quarter of Saturday’s win over Southwest Minnesota State. UMD has yet to throw a pick this fall (sophomore quarterback Drew Bauer is 33-of-73 for 370 yards) but did commit its first turnover of 2014 -- a fumble -- against the Mustangs.
  THIS WEEK - at WSU
- UMD will put its 11-game regular season winning streak on the line this Saturday when it meets another 3-0 club, Winona State University, in an NSIC showdown. It will be the Bulldogs’ final interdivision matchup of the year.
- UMD has outscored its opponents 21-7 in the opening quarter and 37-10 in the first half this fall
- The Bulldogs hold a commanding 32-10 series lead over Winona State in a rivalry that began way in 1931 -- the first year of intercollegiate football at UMD -- and has beaten the Warriors five straight times since they rejoined the NSIC in 2008.

- Returned an INT 43 yards for MSU’s first touchdown of the game.
- Posted three tackles, including two solo tackles.

- Minnesota State owns a 29-14-2 all-time record against Bemidji State and has won their last three meetings dating back to the 2008 season. During their last trip to Bemidji State, the Mavericks defeated the Beavers 28-14 in the 2008 season.

- Despite battling the flu, completed 16-of-28 passes for 330 yards and two touchdowns in Dragons’ 40-36 win over Wayne State on Saturday.
- also rushed for 80 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Had a 25-yard touchdown run during the game.
- also completed a key two-point conversion to Cory Ambrose in the fourth quarter.
- finished with 410 yards of total offense
- now second in the NSIC in total offense per game at 329.0 yards.
Sheldon Jones (DB, 5-11, 180, So., Chicago Heights, Ill./Homewood HS)
- had a solid all-around game for Dragons, finishing with five tackles, an interception and two pass breakups.
- intercepted a pass on a two-point conversion and returned it the length of the field to give the Dragons two huge points in the fourth quarter to give MSUM a 40-36 lead.
- intercepted a pass in the end zone to end a Wayne State scoring threat in the second quarter.
Zayne Medhaug (RB/KR, 6-1, 212, Jr., Wahpeton, N.D./Wahpeton HS)
- Returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown to push MSUM’s lead to 38-23 in the fourth quarter.
- Averaged 64.5 yards per kick return.
- Finished with 220 all-purpose yards.
- also rushed for 102 yards and a touchdown on offense.

MSUM  & USF meet for just the second time with USF winning the last encounter, 45-10, on Sept. 8, 2012 in Sioux Falls.

Tyler Hughes - Utah State ‘05 - 1st Season

Last Week -at MSU - L 58-0
- Shutout for the first time this season and the third time in the past two seasons. Dropped to 0-5 against ranked and receiving votes teams since joining the Northern Sun. Minnesota State at No. 3 was the highest ranked team the Beavers have faced as a member of NCAA DII.
-  #17 Aaron La Deaux (K/P, 6-3, 182, So., Port Orchard, Wash. / South Kitsap), who was named to the All-NSIC North team as a freshman, had to sit out last season due to an injury. He has made the most of his return, averaging 41.6 yards per kick, good for second in the league behind SMSU’s Mike Wenk. La Deaux had a booming 68-yard punt that went out of bounds at the 2-yard line Saturday, the second longest punt in the NSIC this season.
- #12 Crosby Jensen (QB, 6-1, 215, So., Salt Lake City, Utah / Cottonwood / Snow College) was up and down in his first start in a Beavers’ uniform. Jensen was 21-of-39 passing for 154 yards, but had three interceptions and was sacked four times. Jensen 304 yards passing in two games this season for Minot State, but has been picked off five times.
- #5 Levi Freidt (LB, 6-4, 209, Sr., Minot, N.D. / Bishop Ryan) had his best game as a Beaver as far as total tackles, finishing with 15, including nine solo tackles. Freidt also had 2.5 tackles for a loss and one pass breakup. He leads the team with 34 tackles and has 4.5 for a loss. Freidt is fourth in the league in tackles per game at 11.3
- #37 Bryce Broome (DB, 5-11, 197, So., Port Orchard, Wash. / South Kitsap) also finished with 10 total stops. Broome is second on the team with 24 tackles this season.
THIS WEEK - vs WSC
- Minot State plays host to Wayne State n in the Beavers Homecoming
- It is only the second time the Beavers have faced Wayne State in school history, dropping a tight 20-6 contest in 2012
- The Beavers are looking to snap a five-game home losing streak and a six-game overall losing streak, both dating back to 2013. Minot State upended Augustana College in triple overtime in week 2 last season in the last home win for MSU.

-Nick Truen led the Wolves with a career-high 122 yards rushing and the one score.
-  Jared Jacobson added 51 yards on the ground with a touchdown and Steven Erlandson added 44 yards rushing.
- Jacobson also went 15-of-31 through the air for 94 yards and was picked-off once.

- The Wolves were led by Andrew Bell’s seven tackles. Blaine Schmidt added six stops and Devin Olson had five in the loss. Blake Lohr and Tanner Lopez each recorded sacks for NSU while Michael Alberts and Scot Taggart both had a half a sack.

THIS WEEK - at SMSU
- The Wolves are 21-10-2 all-time against Southwest Minnesota State
- SMSU  has won four of the last five meetings, prior to that, NSU had won 16 straight
- NSU hasn’t won in Marshall since 2007
- Last meeting, SMSU won 32-30 in Aberdeen in 2012
- Jared Jacobson had two touchdowns in the loss for Northern while Ryan Weybrecht recorded five total tackles in the loss
- Northern rushed for a season-high 231 yards Saturday in its loss to Augustana

#3 Nephi Garcia, RB, 5-7, 185, Sr., Palm Desert, Calif.
- For the second straight game, Garcia rushed for over 100 yards as he accumulated 121 yards on 30 carries and 2 TDs
- now has seven TDs on the season.
- The 100-yard rushing game by Garcia was the ninth of his career and the second straight this year (134 vs. Bemidji State). Garcia now has rushed for 80 yards or more in 11 straight games.  
#69 Evan Gentry, DL, 6-3, 250, So., Tallahassee, Fla. (North Florida Christian HS)
- Recorded six tackles, four TFLs and a sack
- Led a USF defense held #17/19 St. Cloud State to 158 yards on 43 carries rushing and 59 yards passing or 217 total yards on offense. Through three games, USF, the NSIC’s top-ranked rushing defense, has limited opponents to 240 yards rushing on 106 carries or 2.2 yards per carry through three games.  
- USF recorded its first shutout since 2011 (South Dakota School of Mines and Technology)
#20 Bradley Hatfield, K, 5-11, 185, Sr., Manteca, Calif
- Converted 4-of-5 PATs and on the missed extra point, which was blocked by SCSU, Hatfield picked up the ball and took it into the end zone for a two-point conversion. Hatfield is now 14-of-16 on PATs this season and 1-of-1 on field goals.
- The win over SCSU is the 15th in the last 18 games on their home field. The shutout against SCSU is the first for the Cougars since a 71-0 blanking of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 2011.
- The Cougars defeated a ranked opponent for the second time since the move to NCAA DII three plus years ago. Both against SCSU
THIS WEEK - at MSUM
- USF & MSUM meet up for just the second time with USF winning the last encounter, 45-10, on Sept. 8, 2012 in Sioux Falls.
USF, is ranked sixth in the nation in rushing defense (1st in the NSIC)

- Redshirt freshman wide receiver Nathaniel Huot (6-1, 202, Dawson, Minn.) caught four passes for 58 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 in the first quarter. It was his first career touchdown reception.

- Senior defensive tackle Jacob Levtzow (6-2, 253, Rockham, S.D.) had six tackles, including 0.5 for loss and forced one fumble in SMSU’s loss to UMD.

- Senior punter Mike Wenk (6-0, 205, Hartford, S.D.) had five punts for an average of 49 yards, with four punts inside the UMD 20-yard line and also kicked a PAT in SMSU’s loss to UMD.

THIS WEEK - vs NSU
-SMSU is 10-21-2 all-time with NSU
- SMSU won last meeting 32-30 at NSU in 2012
- NSU had held a 16 game winning streak over Mustangs

- Ledell White (Jr., RB, Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Huskies offensively with 16 carries for 77 yards in the loss at Sioux Falls.
- Kenneth Walker (So., RB, Walworth, Wis.) collected 97 all-purpose yards including 66 rushing yards on 13 carries. He has 921 all-purpose yards in 15 career games.
- Keyshawn Davis (RFY, DB, Milwaukee, Wis.) led the Huskies with nine tackles, a season and career high for the defender.
- Bo Putrah (Sr., DL, Faribault, Minn.) had four tackles for loss and one quarterback sack. He has moved into the top five in career quarterback sacks with 15.5 and into the top ten in tackles for loss with 27 in his career.
- Nathan Holasek (RFY, LB, Chaska, Minn.), Jordan Sefon (Jr., DB, Richfield, Minn.) and Jarek Kunz (Sr., DB, Lake Geneva, Wis.) each had eight tackles, all season highs, in the game. Holasek added a quarterback sack and two tackles for loss.

THIS WEEK - vs UIU
- The Huskies are 1-2 to start the season for the second time in three years.
-St. Cloud State started the 2012 season 1-2 and went on to post a 7-4 record. St. Cloud State returns home to host Upper Iowa University next Saturday.
-The Huskies have won seven straight at Husky Stadium including this season’s home opening win over Wayne State. St. Cloud State is 42-14 all-time at Husky Stadium.

- Touchdowns scored from 99, 3 and 34 yards; the 99-yard touchdown run is a new record for Upper Iowa.
- Tallied 247 yards on 34 carries; the fifth highest single-game total for UIU
- Smith owns four of the top five marks and has rushed over 200 yards seven times
- Has scored the second-most touchdowns in the nation this season (10)
- Broke the UIU program record for career touchdowns (36)
Alex Wahl (LB, 6-2, 235, Elgin, Ill./ Larkin HS)
- Recorded 19 tackles including 9 solo stops
- Added a forced fumble and two pass break ups
- Wahl now has 40 tackles for the season with 21 solo stops
- UIU outscored BSU 27-0 in the fourth quarter to erase the 10-point deficit and remain undefeated at 3-0 for the first time since 1990.
- Cole Jaeschke threw for 259 yards, 3 scores and added a rushing touchdown as well.  
- After taking an early 20-0 lead, the Beavers scored 30 straight points in the second and third quarters.
- Shay Gutman recorded 170 yards of receiving and 2 TDs on 5 catches
- Lucas Hefty pulled in 7 catches for 37 yards
THIS WEEK - at SCSU
UIU played SCSU in 2012 to reopen stadium in the schools first night game.
UIU is 0-3 against SCSU since joining division II
UIU’s lone win in series came in 1949... 23-20.

The No. 24 Winona State football team faced two obstacles Saturday – the elements and the opposing team – but rushed its way to a 33-7 win over Minnesota Crookston.  After throwing for staggering numbers in the first two games, WSU got its rushing game going against the Golden Eagles, running for 288 yards and a pair of scores thanks to a rainstorm that interrupted the Warriors’ normally high-powered passing attack.

THIS WEEK - vs UMD
- No. 24 Winona State (3-0) prepares for a crucial home matchup with No. 4 Minnesota Duluth (3-0) under the lights at Warrior Stadium Saturday night.  
- The Warriors haven’t beaten the Bulldogs since 2003, a game WSU won 24-17.  
- The last time the Warriors played a game with both teams being ranked was in 2009.
