University of Mary wins Women's NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship

Mankato, Minn. - The University of Mary got back to its winning ways as they took home the 2015 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship. The Marauders had won three straight championships before UMD took home the hardware at last year’s championship.  U-Mary amassed 142 points to finish 23 points ahead of second place Augustana.  Six NSIC records fell during the championships, including four on Friday.

Minnesota State’s Brieanna Puckett earned 2015 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship High Point Performer as she won the long jump (19’2.75”) was second in the 60-meter dash (7.63) and the 200-meter dash (25.15) to rack up 26 points as the Mavericks finished in third place with 101 points. 

The University of Mary’s Josie Guptill, Melanie Rodriguez, Kathryn Stewart and Cassandra Jones ended the women’s events with an NSIC record time of 3:50.37 in the 4x400 relay to break the record the Marauders set last year (3:50.99). The Marauder’s Danylle Kurywchak also set a new record in the triple jump as she went 40’11.75” to surpass USF’s Jazz Black’s 2013 record of 40’6”.  

Sara Wells of Wayne State set a new record in the shot put with a heave of 51'11.25", breaking Bemidji State’s Sheena Devine’s record of 51”7.75” set back in 2008.

Augustana’s Kayla Mescher put her name in the record books as well with a 2:13.00 in the 800m run to beat Wayne State’s Paige Pollard’s 2012 record by 1.08 seconds.

The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Indoor Track & Field All-Conference team.NSIC Indoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.

The NCAA National Championships will take place on March 13-14 at CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala.
