Allendale, Mich. - Minnesota State finished with 39 points securing the seventh position at the NCAA National Championships, hosted by Grand Valley State University. The seventh-place finish is the best in school-history at the outdoor track and field championships. St. Augustine's took home the crown finishing with 53 total points.
Leading the Mavericks was senior
Emmanuel Matadi (St. Paul, Minn.). The USTFCCCA Central Region Track Athlete of the Year earned National Championships in both the 100-meter and 200-meter runs. He ran to a time of 10.21 in the 100-meter dash and then posted 20.54 in the 200-meters. His effort this weekend now gives the Mavericks 12 total outdoor track and field individual championships. The last to do so was Chris Reed who took first in the shot put in both the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.
Matadi also earned men’s High Point Scorer awards from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) for his efforts at Grand Valley State on May 21-23.Matadi claimed top honors by just three quarters of a point over another two-time national champion in Adams State’s
Tabor Stevens. Matadi swept the 100- and 200-meter finals and ran the 4×100 relay for a total of 20¾.
Fellow senior
Kyran Stewart (Camilla, Ga.) served as a perfect accompaniment taking All-American honors in both races as well. He took fifth in the 100-meters finishing with a time of 10.43. Following that, he posted a time of 20.93 in the 200-meters finishing in fourth. Overall, Stewart finished with nine teams points from his individual effort. This is the second consecutive year that Stewart received All-American honors as he did so with Albany State University last season.
Matadi and Stewart would join up with
Richard Wilhite, Jr. (Minneapolis, Minn.) and Anthony Gustafson one last time in the 4x100 relay as well. They posted a time of 40.42 and finished in sixth-place.
Last year's 110-meter hurdle runner-up
Myles Hunter (Conyers, Ga.) secured All-American honors once again finishing with a time of 14.00, which put him in fifth-place with four team points.
Senior Keyvan Rudd (Davenport, Iowa) added an outdoor track and field All-American to his Maverick resume as he finished the high jump in sixth-place with a height of 6'11.75". This is his third All-American honor overall joining two previous indoor awards.
Augustana's Paul Yak competed in the men's 5,000-meter run, earning his first outdoor All-American finish and third All-American honor in his career at Augustana. The Storm Lake, Iowa native came into the race ranked 17th in the nation and exceeded his expectations surpassing two runners to take seventh-place with a time of 14:33.77. Yak started in a pack, then found himself in ninth-place with six laps to go. The senior dug deep and was able to pass two runners in the last 100-meters to close out his career for Augustana with an All-American honor in the 5k.
