NSIC Wrestler of the Week
Matt Mincey (157, R-Sr., Apple Valley, Minn. / Apple Valley HS) - Minnesota State
- Went 3-0 at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana
- Defeated No. 1 ranked and defending national champion Jonatan Rivera of Notre Dame 6-3
- Defeated Heath Lange by tech fall, 16-1, as Mavericks upset No. 16 Indianapolis 21-12
- Defeated No 7 Chase White of Nebraska-Kearney by a 7-3 decision.
- The sixth ranked Mincey improved to 12-0 on the year
2015-16 NSIC Wrestling Notes
Augustana
- Defeated Northern State 31-12 in their lone dual of the weekend
- Aero Amo moved up to 197 to defeat No. 7 Joe Gomez from Northern State by way of a 5-1 sudden victory
- Amo improved his record to 16-1 on the season
- Amo is on a 12 match winning streak
- Amo is currently ranked No. 7 at 184 pounds
- Ben Goodwin (174 Pounds) improved to 4-1 on the season with 17-4 major decision victory defeating Anthony Navarro
- Logan Henning (184 Pounds) recorded his sixth pin of the season against David Murphy
U-Mary
- U-Mary returned to the mat for an NSIC Dual against Minot State
- The Marauders dominated the mat with four pins en route to the 37-10 win for their first conference win of the year
- Tate Barnhardt pinned Colton Nichols at 3:50 for his team leading 11th pin of the year
- Dane Fischer had the fastest pin over Jered Sublet at 1:03
- Riley Nagel pinned Carlos Toledano at 5:27
- Dylan Mitzel pinned Briley Crissler at 6:21 after a hard-fought bout
- The Marauders will travel to Kearney, Neb., this weekend to compete in the Midwest Duals
Minnesota State
- Minnesota State competed at the National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana where they went 1-2 on the day
- MSU’s win was an upset over No. 16 Indianapolis by a final score of 21-12
- In their other two contests, they were defeated by No. 5 Notre Dame 27-9, and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney 27-19
- Matt Mincey (R-Sr., 157 lbs.) went 3-0 on the day, including a 6-3 decision over No. 1 ranked and defending national champion, Jonatan Rivera (Notre Dame), a 16-1 tech fall over Heath Lange (Indianapolis), and a 7-3 decision over No. 7 ranked Chase White (Nebraska-Kearney)
- Mincey is now 12-0 on the year and was ranked No. 6 in the nation heading into this week
- Malcolm Allen (R-Sr., 285 lbs.) also finished 3-0 on the day
- Minnesota State competes next at their home opener on Thursday, where they will face the Dragons of MSU Moorhead
MSU Moorhead
- MSUM finished in second place in the American College division at Virginia Duals with 2-1 mark
- Junior Blake Bosch went 3-0 at 133 pounds and was named Outstanding Wrestler of the American College Division at Virginia Duals last weekend
- The Dragons opened with 48-0 win over Apprentice School and followed with a 24-16 win over Ferrum in the semifinals
- The Dragons lost to No. 17 Kutztown in the championship
- Redshirt freshman Kristian Vazquez (141), freshman Adam Blees (165) and junior Nader Abdullatif (285) each went 2-1 on the weekend
- MSUM opens the NSIC schedule this week with duals at Minnesota State and Upper Iowa
Minot State
- Minot State lost its first dual of the new year at Mary 37-10
- The loss moves the Beavers record to an overall 3-4 on the season
- Cody Haugen (149, So., Minot, N.D.) earned a 7-3 win to improve his record to 9-9
- Mitchell Eull (HWT, Jr., Buffalo, Minn.) earned his 14th win of the year in a 4-1 victory
- Minot State will compete next in the Midwest Duals hosted by Nebraska-Kearney on January 16
Northern State
- The Northern State University wrestling team opened the NSIC season with a 31-12 loss to No. 15 Augustana
- Northern held strong through the lower weights with a 12-12 tie heading into the 174 pound match
- Recording wins for the Wolves were Carson Henry, Blake Perryman, and Sean Havlovic
- NSU will be back in action next Saturday at the UNK Midwest Duals, taking on Western State, Colorado Pueblo, Colorado School of Mines, and Adams State.
Southwest Minnesota State
- SMSU was idle last week
- The Mustangs will resume competition at the Midwest Duals on Jan. 16 in Kearney, Neb.
St. Cloud State
- The Huskies placed second at the 2016 NWCA Division II National Duals on Jan. 8-9 in Fort Wayne, Ind.
- SCSU had a 43-3 first round win over No. 18 Newberry and continued its run with a 32-6 victory over No. 9 Lake Erie. In the semifinals, SCSU posted a 30-7 win over No. 7 Pitt-Johnstown. In the title match, SCSU lost a 21-15 tilt against No. 5 Notre Dame College of Ohio.
- Jarred Oftedahl, who is unranked nationally, scored a 4-0 record at the NWCA Duals and his win total included a 5-1 upset against No. 5 ranked David Bravery of Notre Dame College of Ohio.
- No. 1 Austin Goergen was 4-0 in action at 285-pounds at the NWCA Duals. Goergen now owns a 19-0 record this season with 13 pins.
- Goergen charted a pair of 16-0 tech falls at the NWCA Duals against No. 3 D.J. Simms of Pitt-Johnstown and No. 8 Evan Loughman of Lake Erie
- No. 1 ranked Clint Poster (165-pounds) lost his first match of the 2015-16 season with a 6-4 OT loss to Juwan Edmond of Notre Dame at the NWCA Duals. Poster owns a 21-1 record this season for the Huskies.
- SCSU head coach Steve Costanzo won his 200th career win as a college coach with the Huskies’ 43-3 win over Newberry on Jan. 8. Costanzo now owns a 202-57-2 career record in 17 years as a college coach. In 10 seasons at SCSU, Costanzo is 141-27 as the Huskies’ head coach.
- Clayton Jennissen added a 3-0 record at the NWCA Duals in action at 174-pounds for the Huskies. He now owns an 18-3 record this season.
- Clint Poster has 129 career victories at SCSU and is closing in on the SCSU team record of 144 career victories notched by Tad Merritt from 2008-12
- SCSU currently owns a 5-1 record and it will continue the season with a trip to the Ranger Duals in Kenosha, Wisc. on Jan. 16. SCSU was ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest NCAA DII rankings with Clint Poster (165), Austin Goergen (285) and Tim Prescott (125) all earning number one individual rankings in the DI polls.
Upper Iowa
- Upper Iowa went 4-1 at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind. to place fifth overall
- The Peacocks defeated four ranked teams along the way including No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit (24-15), No. 18 Newberry (24-13), No. 12 Tiffin (29-15) and No. 3 Nebraska-Kearney (21-20) in an unreal finish in the fifth-place match
- The lone loss for UIU came in the championship quarterfinals to the No. 1 Saints of Maryville University (33-10)
- The Peacocks, ranked No. 11 in the latest NWCA Top 20 Poll, are now 9-1 on the year in duals
- Trailing by 17 points (20-3) with three matches remaining against UNK, the Peacocks would need a special and thrilling ending to pull off the upset and place fifth. Dalton Westerlund (184) gave the team hope with a win by fall just 45 seconds into his match and after the Lopers forfeited the match at 197, the Peacocks trailed by only five points, 20-15, with the heavyweight match remaining. Avery Jacobs, a true freshman from New London, Iowa, rose to the occasion and completed Upper Iowa’s comeback with a win by fall just 31 seconds into the final match giving UIU six points, the 21-20 victory and fifth place at the NWCA National Duals
- Zak Benitz and Colbey Vance both went 4-0 in the duals to lead Upper Iowa
- Upper Iowa has now placed in the top eight in eight of the last nine years at the National Duals
- The Peacocks will return to Dorman Gym this coming Friday night, Jan. 15, against the Dragons of MSU Moorhead at 7 p.m.
