UMary Wins First NSIC Women's Cross Country Championship

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The University of Mary won its first NSIC Women's Cross Country Championship as the Marauders scored 33 teams points after placing four runners in the top eight. The individual champion was Minnesota Duluth’s Emi Trost.  The junior edged out defending champion Lexie Zeis from UMary by three seconds to lead the Bulldogs to a second place finish (47 points). The championship was ran at Yankton Trail Park in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Trost broke away mid-race and held on to finish with a time of 19:51.37 to finish just ahead of defending National Champion Zeis, who finished with a time of 19:54.68.  UMary’s Ida Narbuvoll was third (20:01.74) and earned NSIC Newcomer of the Year honor as she was the top finisher competing in their first year of NSIC competition. Breanna Colbenson of UMD was fourth with a time of 20:14.91. Finishing seventh and eighth for the Marauders was Kate Fox (20:55.02) and Kaycie Stewart (21:05.70).   

UMary Head Coach Dennis Newell was voted by his peers as the NSIC Coach of Year for the second time in his career.

Next action for NSIC Cross Country will be at the NCAA Regional on Saturday, November 5 at Yankton Trails in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, hosted by Augustana University.  The men’s race is set to begin at 10 a.m. with the women’s race to follow at 11:15 a.m.
