NSIC Wrestler of the Week
Vince Dietz
(197-pounds, Redshirt Sophomore, Homer Glen, Ill./Lockport Township HS)
St. Cloud State

- Claimed third place at the prestigious Northern Iowa Open on Dec. 3 in the 197-pound bracket with a 3-1 record
- In the quarterfinals, won by fall over Jeremy Rodman (Northern Iowa) (Fall 1:41)
- In the semi’s, he lost to Missouri’s J’den Cox, who won a bronze medal at the 2016 Summer Olympics
- In the consolation matches, Dietz won by a tech fall over South Dakota State’s Nolan Funk
- Placed third with an 8-0 major decision over Iowa State’s Joe Teague
- Opened the NSIC dual season with a 15-2 major decision over Jackson Ryan of SMSU on Dec. 1

Team Notes
- Went 2-1 at the South Dakota Showcase with wins over Dakota Wesleyan and Northern State, before falling to a Division I top-25 team in South Dakota State.
-  Augustana's 56-0 victory over Dakota Wesleyan was their largest dual victory in exactly two years as the Vikings toppled the Tigers 56-0 on Dec. 4, 2014 in Mitchell, S.D.

- At 184, Aero Amo went 3-0 on the day. Amo earned a forfeit win against DWU and earned decisions against NSU and SDSU
- At 285, Michael Lowman went 2-0 with a major decision against NSU and a decision against SDSU

- UMary won five out of the total 20 matches over the weekend and lost its second straight dual of the 2016-17 season
- Lost 17-9 in takedowns against Upper Iowa and lost reversals, 5-3 against the Peacocks
Top Performer(s)
- Tate Barnhardt (133) won both his matches over the weekend
- Against the Cobbers he won by a 9-5 decision over Aaron Dick of Concordia College
- He brought that same intensity to Mary’s first NSIC dual of the season and won by fall over Chase Seaney of UIU
- With the two wins over the weekend, Barnhardt improves his record to 9-6 this season

- 21 Wrestlers competed for the Mavericks at the Wisconsin Open in Kenosha
-The Mavericks had two wrestlers take home first place finishes at the Wisconsin Open
- Minnesota State had 6 wrestlers place in the top five at the event in their weight classes
Top Performer(s)
- Adam Cooling (Sr., 174) finished first at the Wisconsin Open with a 4-0 record at the tournament.
- Matthew Blome (Fr., 184)(Unattached) finished first for third time in tournaments this season for the Mavericks and now holds a 14-1 record.
-Logan Saltou (Fr., 157 lbs.)(Unattached) took second in Kenosha.
-Daniel Close (So., 141 lbs.) finished in third with a 3-1 record.

- Dragons also had a runner-up finish and a third-place finish on the day

- Senior Nader Abdullatif won the 285-pound title at the Dragon Open, going 4-0 on the day with three wins by fall
- Senior Blake Bosch won his third Dragon Open title of his career with a 3-0 record at 133 pounds, winning all three matches by fall
- Sophomore Jared Goldsmith won the title at 125 pounds
- Sophomore Dylan Connell was second at 149 pounds

Team Notes
- The Wolves opened the dual season from the SD Showcase and the Sanford Pentagon against No. 20 South Dakota State, No. 16 Augustana, and Dakota Wesleyan
- Northern went 1-2 with a victory over Dakota Wesleyan, and two close losses to the Jackrabbits and Vikings
- Three Wolves tallied wins versus the Jackrabbits, as Northern had fewer points scored on them as a team then a season ago against the strong division I team
- Had it not been for a necessary forfeit at 197 pounds, the Wolves would have pulled out a victory over Augustana as they fell 19-18 in the match
- NSU tallied seven match victories versus the Tigers, including two wins by fall

- Blake Perryman was the only wrestler to go a perfect 3-0 on the day with two decision victories and a win by fall
- Sean Havlovic notched two wins versus the Vikings and the Tigers in a major decision and fall

- The Huskies opened their 2016-17 NSIC season with a 36-3 victory at Southwest Minnesota State on Dec. 1 in Marshall
- SCSU also competed at the 2016 UNI Open in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Dec. 3
- SCSU is currently ranked #1 in the nation in the DII polls this season
- SCSU posted nine wins in the dual victory over SMSU on Dec. 1
- SCSU has won 45 consecutive NSIC matches dating back to a loss to Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011
Top Performer(s)
- Vince Dietz went 3-1 to take third place at the UNI Open in the 197-pound bracket.  His only lost at UNI was a setback against Olympic Bronze Medalist J’Den Cox of Missouri
- Gabe Fogarty placed fifth at the UNI Open with a 5-2 record at 165-pounds.  He had four falls in the tournament
- Clayton Jennissen also placed fifth at UNI with a 4-2 record at 174-pounds.  Jennissen also claimed a major decision win in the 174-pound against SMSU

W, 36-9 vs. UMary 2-0, 1-0 NSIC W2 2nd
Team Notes
- The #5 Peacock wrestling team was back on the mat in Fayette for the first time in a month on Sunday
- Upper Iowa defeated the University of Mary 36-9 in Dorman Gym in the Northern Sun Conference opener for both teams to improve to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference
- UIU registered two wins by fall and three technical fall victories to secure the win
- The home team claimed advantages of 17-9 in takedowns and 5-3 in reversals
Top Performer(s)
- Maleek Williams (#7) started the dual off on the right foot for the Peacocks with a first period pin (2:43) of Josh Jensen. Williams scored a pair of takedowns and two nearfall points, but didn't find his winning position until a reversal in the final minute of the first period gave way to his win by fall
- Colbey Vance  had to rally from behind in the 174-pound match to earn his victory over Austin Eichmann. Vance trailed 5-2 midway through the second period, when he caught Eichmann in a scramble. He scored a takedown and had four nearfall points waiting in the official's pocket when he worked his position into UIU's second pin (4:43) on the afternoon
- Damian Penichet  (#1) was dominant in his match against Noah Huff scoring a takedown in the opening seconds and then adding on ten points of nearfall in the first period. Penichet closed out the bout in the second period with a second takedown and two more nearfall points to win 16-0 (4:43)
- Dalton Westerlund (#6) was very impressive in the 184-pound bout. The senior defeated Jonathon Pelach 19-2 (4:47) to earn the tech fall victory. Westerlund scored one takedown and added four separate four-point nearfalls to claim the win
- Logan Hopp  registered Upper Iowa's third tech fall of the dual in the heavyweight match. Hopp dominated the bout with Dominic Tudor picking up five takedowns and a reversal while adding eight nearfall points to win 20-5 (6:41)
