NSIC Player of the Week
#20 Tara Duran (C/2B, 5-2, Sr., R/R, Colorado Springs, Colo. / Liberty HS) - Upper Iowa
- Led the Peacocks with a .556 (5-9) average, with two doubles and three runs scored
- Was tied for the team lead with four RBI and added a pair of walks
- Help UIU to a 3-1 start at the UAM 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Arkansas
NSIC Pitcher of the Week
#6 Brooke Redmond (LHP, 5-4, Sr., L/L, Basehor, Kan. / Basehor-Linwood HS) - Upper Iowa
- Went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA in two compete games against Illinois Springfield and Southwest Baptist
- Struck out an NSIC high 19 batters last week while walking only four in 15 innings
- Recorded ten strikeouts in a 5-4, eight-inning win over Southwest Baptist
NSIC Team Notes
Augustana
- Augustana was idle last week
- The Vikings will play five games in three days at the Kelly Lass NSIC/MIAA Crossover starting with Nebraska-Kearney at 7 a.m. on Feb. 19
- The Vikings open the five-game trip against Nebraska-Kearney at 7 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 19
- The Vikings are 6-5 on the season after opening the year going 5-1 in six games in Hawaii
- Augustana then went 1-4 at the Desert Stinger in Las Vegas
Bemidji State
- Opens season Feb. 22-23 in St. Paul, Minnesota
Concordia-St. Paul
- CSP was idle last week
- The Golden Bears will travel to St. Cloud for the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament this weekend
University of Mary
- U-Mary is off until February 29 when they visit Clermont, Fla., for the annual Dot Richardson Spring Games
Minnesota, Crookston
- Opens season Feb. 20-21 in Aberdeen, South Dakota
Minnesota Duluth
- UMD opened the season going 1-3 at the UAM 8-State Classic
- UMD’s two games on Sunday were rained out
- Natalie Wright hit .400 on the week going 4-for-10
- UMD will head to West St. Paul for non-conference games with BSU, MSUM and Central Lakes CC on Mon.-Tues. Feb 22-23
Minnesota State
- For the third straight year MSU opened its season at the UAM 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark.
- The Mavericks went 1-2 this weekend as their schedule was shortened due to inclement weather
- Dana Mogren led Minnesota State with 4 RBI, three runs scored and three extra base hits in the teams first week of action
- Mogren had the game winning hit against East Central, as she laced a two RBI double to give the Mavericks a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
- Mogren blasted a two-run home run against Southeastern Oklahoma State the next day to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the third.
- MSU will travel to St. Cloud, Minn. later this week to take part in the Kelly Lass NSIC/MIAA Crossover
MSU Moorhead
- Opens season Feb. 22-23 in West St. Paul, Minnesota
Minot State
- Minot State was idle after going 3-2 at the 2016 Montana State-Billings Desert Stinger Feb. 5-7
- The Beavers are off until playing nonconference games against Minnesota Crookston, Bemidji State and Concordia-St. Paul Feb. 27-28 in St. Cloud, Minnesota
Northern State
- Opens season Feb. 19-20 in Rochester, Minnesota
Sioux Falls
- Sioux Falls opened their season in St. Cloud, Minn. with a pair of doubleheader sweeps to start the year 4-0
- USF held both of their opponents to one run each game, using a strong pitching tandem of Breanna Black and Kerrigan Hoshaw
- The Cougars pounced on Wisconsin-Parkside for a 9-1, five-inning victory in their season opener and added a 2-1 win in game two
- Brooke Stetzler and Shannon Daly each recorded four hits in the first doubleheader of the season
- On Saturday, Black and Hoshaw pitched USF to two wins, taking down Jamestown, 2-1 in eight inning and 5-1 in game two
- Black threw all eight innings for a complete game in game one
- Hoshaw was helped by Betsy Thomas and Alyson Netty’s back-to-back homeruns in her 5-1 win
- Sioux Falls returns to the diamond at the Teri Mathis Zenner Invitational on Feb. 27 and 28
Southwest Minnesota State
- Opens season Feb. 18-19 in St. Cloud, Minnesota
St. Cloud State
-The SCSU softball team went 2-2 on the week with wins over UW-Parkside on Saturday, Feb. 13, and losses to Jamestown on Friday afternoon, Feb. 12
-The team is off to a 6-2 start in 2016 and will play five more games at home before the first road trip of the season
-The Huskies had a team batting average of .339 on the week with seven extra base hits
-Jordin Novak had a game-winning infield single against UW-Parkside in the bottom of the seventh inning of the 5-4 victory
-Jessica Goerger hit the eventual game-winning home run for SCSU in the bottom of the sixth inning against UW-Parkside
-Goerger ended up hitting .600 on the week with six hits, two doubles, a home run, five RBIs, three walks and 11 total bases
-Alyssa Coletto has started her season on an eight game hitting streak and has total five multi-hit games
-Abby Bunnell has gotten on base safely in each of her first eight games of the season
-The team will host the 10 team Kelly Laas Invitational from Feb. 18-21. There are five teams from the NSIC and five teams from the MIAA in the tournament
-The tournament is named in connect with former SCSU softball player Kelly Laas, who passed away in March 2011 following a courageous battle against ovarian cancer. SCSU named the annual dome tournament invite in her honor beginning in the spring of 2012
-The Huskies play against Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 18 at 5 p.m., Central Missouri on Feb. 19 at 2:30 p.m., Fort Hays on Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m., Emporia State on Feb. 21 at 10 a.m. and Missouri Western State on Feb. 21 at 2:30 p.m.
Upper Iowa
- The Peacocks went 3-1 to start the year at the UAM 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Ark., beating Pitt State (10-0, 5 inn.), Southwest Baptist (5-4, 8 inn.), and Illinois Springfield (3-1), but lost to Northwest Missouri State (7-4)
- UIU hit .313 over the weekend and had three different players have multi-hit games
- Senior Tara Duran led the Peacocks with a .556 (5-9) average, with two doubles, three runs scored and tied for the team lead with 4 RBI
- Peacock pitching held opponents to a .182 average and as a staff had a 2.07 ERA
- Senior Brooke Redmond went 2-0 with a 1.40 ERA in two compete games, struck out 19 and walked four in 15 innings
- Upper Iowa will take part in the NSIC/MIAA Challenge in Rochester, Minn. next week and will play four games over the weekend, starting with Pitt State at 11 a.m. on Feb. 19
Wayne State
- WSC went 0-4 at the 8-State Classic in Bentonville, Arkansas over the weekend
- Senior outfielder Lexie Loos hit safely in all four games, going 6 for 14 (.429) with four runs scored
- Loos was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored in the 8-3 loss to Southeastern Oklahoma State
- Melanie Alyea went 3 for 3 with a double and run scored in 7-3 loss to unbeaten Southern Arkansas
- Alyea was 5 for 12 (.417) with three doubles and two runs scored in four games
- WSC is off until March 1 when the Wildcats visit Fort Hays State
Winona State
- Opens season Feb. 16 in Rochester, Minnesota against Grand View
