MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato won its first indoor track & field championship since 2009 as the Maverick took home the 2016 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship in their home arena. The Mavericks amassed 140.5 points to finish nine points ahead of second place Augustana.  The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Emilee Trost earned NSIC High Point Performers after she set two NSIC records on the final day of competition.

Trost earned 22.5 points after winning the mile, the 1000m and was part of the winning DMR. Trost crushed the NSIC record in the mile as she finished in a time of 4.44:38 to shatter the 2013 record of 4.53:96 previously held by U-Mary’s Melissa Agnew.  Trost’s time automatically qualifiers her for the NCAA Championships.  Trost then came back to win the 1000m in a time of 2:48.97 to break the NSIC record of 2:51.43 set by Agnew in 2013. The UMD DRM provisionally qualified on Saturday with a time of 12:05:16.
MSU’s Altonice Williams set a new mark in the 60-m hurdles with a time of 8.36 to break U-Mary’s Janet Johnson’s record from 2014 of 8.37.
On Friday, Winona State’s Kaitlyn Long crushed her own weight throw record with a heave of 22.01m (72-2.5). The throw was the second longest throw in NCAA Division II history and the second longest throw in all three divisions this season. The throw only trailed Long's own throw of 22.25 (73-0) from earlier this season. The throw was also an NCAA automatic qualifying mark.

The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Indoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Indoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.

NSIC Indoor Track & Field athletes of the year will be announced early next week.
