Sioux Falls, S.D. – A potent first half of action led the Northern State University women's basketball team over Wayne State College 76-56 in the quarterfinal round of the NSIC/Sanford Health Basketball Tournament. With the victory the Wolves improve to 23-6 overall and will face Sioux Falls Monday at 2:30 p.m. from the Sanford Pentagon in the semifinals.
The Wolves tallied 46 points in the first half, and held the Wildcats to 18 total, and just three in the second quarter. Wayne State battled back in the second half, but could not overcome the Northern State lead. The Wildcats shot just 27.1 percent from the floor, due to aggressive defense by the Wolves. Northern on the other hand shot 52.1 percent from the floor, 40.0 percent from the arc, and 84.6 percent from the foul line.
Northern suffered 19 turnovers in the game, however battled for 34 points in the paint and 26 points of the bench. The women also hit the boards, out-rebounding their opponents 44-24 and tallying 10 second chance points. The Wolves largest lead of 28 points game with two minutes remaining in the first half of play.
Senior
Lauren Deadrick led the team with 18 points and ten rebounds for a double-double. She added five blocks, two assists, and an 85.7 percentage from the floor. Deadrick was one of three NSU women in double figures followed by
Paige Waytashek and
Miranda Ristau with 15 each. Waytashek was a spark for the Wolves in the first half knocking down 13 of her points in the first 20 minutes of action.
Devon Brecke and
Alexis Tappe each added nine points, while
Jill Conrad notched eight. Brecke, Conrad, Tappe, and
Bethany Crosswait were second on the team with six rebounds each in the victory.
Gabby Laimer returned to action with two points in just six minutes of play. Conrad led the team with five assists, followed by Waytashek with four.
NSU returns to action tomorrow versus the Cougars of the University of Sioux Falls. Northern fell to USF earlier this season from Wachs Arena, and will look to return the favor in the post season.
