MARSHALL, Minn. — The Southwest Minnesota State softball team continues on in the NSIC Tournament after defeating Bemidji State, 4-2 on Friday afternoon.
Southwest Minnesota State will advance to play Minnesota Duluth, a team who it split with in the regular season. Bemidji State was eliminated and finished the season 33-19 overall.
Alex O'Connor started the game but
Athena Golling came in to pick up the win. O'Connor hurled the first 3 2/3 innings, allowing four hits and one run, while striking out three. Golling finished the 3 1/3 innings giving up three hits and a run, while adding to the strikeout total with four punch-outs.
SMSU registered seven hits and four RBIs, while stranding five.
Taylor Chavez paced the Mustang offense with two hits and a run scored.
Sam Flack and
Karmann Carroll both added to the scoring, each blasting a home run.
The Mustangs started the scoring in the third inning after Carroll hit a solo shot to left, before Flack joined the club two batters later with a home run of her own. Mustangs led 2-0 heading into the fourth, before
Jazmyne Neely singled to score a run, followed by
Victoria Brooks with a double to score Neely and gave SMSU a 4-0 lead. The Beavers chipped away at the Mustang lead scoring a run in the fourth and fifth innings, but three-straight ground outs in the sixth and three-straight strikeouts in the seventh gave SMSU a 4-2 victory.
