Sioux Falls, S.D. – Seven events are complete and three records fell after day one of the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship held at Howard Wood Field, hosted by Augustana University.
After a strong showing in the pole vault Sioux Falls leads with 47 points. The four-time defending champions of Minnesota State are in second place with 43.5 points while U-Mary is third with 29 points.
USF scored 24 of its points in the pole vault as the swept the top three spots. To end the day, Sioux Falls Scott Greenman set a new mark in the pole vault as he cleared 17-00.25 to break UMD’s Jason Beutz’s record of 16-10 set in 2011.
MSU used a strong showing in the high jump as Frank Veldman cleared 6-8 to win, while teammates Jeff Decock took second and fourth place.
MSU Moorehead’s Cody Christ started out the championship breaking a 35-year-old record in the 10000 meter run. Christ crossed the tape in 30:24.05, nearly 14 second faster than former Dragon Dave Sederquist’s record of 30:37.94 from 1981. The time was an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
St. Cloud State’s Keyshawn Davis broke the record in the long jump with a leap of 24-09.75. He broke MSU Moorhead’s Derek Bredy’s 2013 record of 24-7.75.
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.
The NCAA National Championships will take place on May 26-28 at in Bradenton, Florida.
The NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship resumes Saturday morning at 11 a.m. with field events followed by track finals beginning at 1 p.m.
