Minnesota State wins fifth straight NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship

Sioux Falls, S.D.  – Minnesota State won its fifth straight NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships behind an impressive performance at Howard Wood Field. The Mavericks, which have won seven of the last eight titles, scored 166.5 points to finish 25.5 points ahead of second place Augustana.  The Mavericks won six individual events and one relay at the championship. In all, five new records were set by the men at the championship. 
 
St. Cloud State’s Ryan Johnson earned NSIC High Pointer Performer on the men’s side as he amassed 26 points after winning the hammer throw and placing second in the shot put and discus. Teammate Quinn Anderson set a new NSIC record in the discus with a heave of 183-09, which broke former Husky Adam Kershaw’s 2011 record of 181-02. 

The Maverick's Michael Sandle set a new record in the triple jump as he soared 49-09 to break the 2015 record of MSU's David Pearcill record of 49-4.125.

On day one, MSU Moorhead's Cody Christ started out the championship breaking a 35-year-old record in the 10000 meter run. Christ crossed the tape in 30:24.05, nearly 14 second faster than former Dragon Dave Sederquist's record of 30:37.94 from 1981. The time was an NCAA provisional qualifying time. St. Cloud State's Keyshawn Davis broke the record in the long jump with a leap of 24-09.75.  He broke MSU Moorhead's Derek Bredy's 2013 record of 24-7.75.

Also on day one, Sioux Falls Scott Greenman set a new mark in the pole vault as he cleared 17-00.25 to break UMD's Jason Beutz's record of 16-10 set in 2011.

The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.

The NCAA National Championships will take place on May 26-28 at in Bradenton, Florida. The entire field for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 17 at 5 p.m. on NCAA.com.
