USTFCCCA Release

BISMARCK, ND – Picking right up where she left off last year, University of Mary junior Alexis Zeis once again is in the national spotlight. After cruising to a win in the Marauders season-opening meet, the defending national champion was named the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Women's Division II Cross Country Athlete of the Week.

This is the third time in her career that Zeis has claimed cross country national athlete of the week recognition after she was honored twice last season.

Zeis opened up the season in spectacular fashion. The Bismarck, ND, native posted a time of 13:12.3 to win the MSUM Dragon Twilight on Friday, Sept. 9, capturing the event by 12.1 seconds. The meet runner-up was Emilee Trost of Minnesota Duluth, who finished seventh at the 2015 NCAA championships.

The four-time All-American is now undefeated in six straight races. Zeis won all five cross country meets she competed in next year and captured her first competition of 2016.

The Marauders next compete at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 24.
