MANKATO, Minn. - Minnesota State won its sixth straight NSIC Men's Indoor Track & Field Championship in at Myers Field House. The Mavericks, which also won its eighth championship in the last nine years, totaled 183.5 team points to finished 29.5 points ahead of second place Sioux Falls. In all, eight NSIC records or broken or tied during the championship.
Minnesota State’s Michael Sandle earned the meets high point performer as he accumulated 26 points for the Mavericks. Sandle shattered the NSIC record in the triple jump as he soared an NCAA Automatic Qualifying distance of 53-10.5, the longest jump in NCAA Division II and the third longest in all three divisions of the NCAA this season. He also finished second in the high jump and the long jump.
The MSU 4x400 relay ended the championship with a record setting run of 3:18.29 to break the 2013 mark set by MSU of 3:18.61.
In the men’s mile, Sioux Falls’ Jase Kraft just edged Josh Young of MSU Moorhead by .04 and set a the NSIC record with a time of 4:10.82. Kraft broke the 2013 mark of Clayton Foster (4:13.23) of MSUM.
Augustana’s Glen Ellingson set a pair of NSIC records as he won the 5000m and the 3000m races. Saturday Ellingson finished the 5000m in a time of 14:39.66 to break the time of 14:45.85 ran by Augie’s Keegan Carda last year. On Friday, Ellingson set the record in the 3000m as he crossed the line in 8:16.97 to break the 2015 record of 8:25.37 set by Sioux Falls’ William Brockmeuller.
On Friday in the 400m prelims, Minnesota State’s John Schuster ran a NCAA provisional time of 48.44 to break MSU’s Jerrell Hancock’s 2013 NSIC record of 48.48. Schuster would win the event on Saturday. Augustana’s Josh Barrows set a new NSIC record in the prelims of the 800m as he ran a time of 1:52.62 to break SMSU’s Alejandro Sanchez 2015 record of 1:52.93. He went on to win the race on Saturday in 1:53.72. MSU’s Jeff DeCock also tied the record in the men’s high jump as he won the event with a leap of 6-11.75.
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Indoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Indoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org. The NCAA National Championships will take place on March 10-11 the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The field of student-athletes participating will be announced on Tuesday, Feb 28 at approximately 5 p.m.
