MANKATO, Minn. – Minnesota State University, Mankato won its second straight championship as the Maverick took home the 2017 NSIC Indoor Track & Field Championship in their home arena. The Mavericks amassed 171 points to finish 68 points ahead of second place UMary.  The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Emilee Trost repeated as NSIC High Point Performers after she set two NSIC records. In all, ten records fell in the 19 women’s events. 

Trost earned 30 points after winning the mile, the 600m and the 1000m. Trost broke her own NSIC record in the mile as she finished in a time of 4.41:88 to shatter the 2013 record of 4.44:38.  Trost’s time automatically qualifiers her for the NCAA Championships.  Trost then came back to win the 1000m in a time of 2:48.97 to break the NSIC record of 2:51.43 set by Agnew in 2013. Trost broke her own NSIC record in the 600m as she finished in a time of 1:32.41, surpassing last years’ time by over a second.

University of Mary’s Alexis Zeis set a pair of records at the championship.  She won the 5000m on Saturday with an NCAA Automatic qualifying time of 16:27.92  to shatter the 2011 time of 16:41.11 ran by Augustana’s Runa Falch.  Zeis also set the record in the women’s 3000m on Friday as she finished in a time of 9:34.32, breaking U-Mary’s Jennifer Agnew’s 2013 record of 9:37.65.
UMary won the 4X400 relay in 3:47.46 to break their own NSIC record of 3:50.37 set in 2015. The relay team consisted of Julia Hammerschmidt, Maria Bolibruch, Nelecia Richards and Tonie Pandohie.

A pair of Mavericks set records Saturday as Haley Kruger ran 2:12.26 in the 800m to break the 2015 record of Augusutana Kayla Mescher (2:13.00). Afure Adah set the record in the 200m with a time of 24:53. She surpassed UMary’s Kathryn Stewart’s 2013 time of 24:56.
 
On Friday, Winona State’s Katelin Long extended her NSIC record with a throw of 73-5.25, which is the second longest throw in NCAA Division II history behind her national record of throw of 74-5.75 from last season. Courtney Crandall of the University of Sioux Falls set a new women’s pole vault record as she cleared an NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 14-2 and broke Minnesota State’s Katelyn Rains 2009 NSIC record of 14-1.25. The University of Minnesota Duluth’s women’s distance medley relay team of Maria Berg, Paige Du, Elizabeth Kyes and Breanna Colbenson finished in a time of 12:01.42 to win and break NSIC record. The previous record of 12:03.78 was set by UMD in 2013.
 
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Indoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Indoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.
 
The NCAA National Championships will take place on March 10-11 the CrossPlex in Birmingham, Alabama. The field of student-athletes participating will be announced on Tuesday, Feb 28 at approximately 5 p.m.
