SCSU extends lead at NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships after day two

ROCHESTER, Minn. – The 2017 NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships continued Wednesday and records continued to fall as St. Cloud State opened up its lead.  The Huskies sit at 503 points, 88 ahead of second place Minnesota State.  MSU Moorhead sits third with 341 points.  Five more NSIC records were set in the six finals on Wednesday, bring the total to eight new records in the first two days of the championship. 

Wednesday finals started with a record breaking performance in the 200 freestyle relay where Minnesota State’s Cheyenne Rova, Chelsea Calhoon, Maggie Knier and Cecilia Hake finished in a time of 1:33.87. That time was nearly three seconds under the NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:36.59.

Hannah Kastigar continues her record setting season as she won both the 400 IM and the 100 butterfly.  Kastigar finished in 4:18.00 in the 400 IM, winning by over ten seconds and just missing an NCAA A Standard qualifying time. In the 100 butterfly it was a bit closers as she finished in 54.27, just under a second ahead of Minnesota State’s Taylor Bass (54.95) and again missing an NCAA A Standard by half a second.

Andrea Bryson helped extend the St. Cloud State lead as she won the 200 yard freestyle with an NSIC record time of 1:50.91, and NCAA B Standard time.

Minnesota State’s Jaycie Klein won the 1-meter diving competition as she amassed 394.60 points.

The night was capped off by Cheyenne Rova placing her name in the record books for the fourth time in the past two days.  She was part of the 400 medley relay team from MSU that took top honors with a time ot 3:47.62, just breaking the old NSIC record by hundredths of a second. Rova was teamed up with Cecilia Hake, Carley LeDoux and Taylor Bass for the NCAA provisional qualifying swim.   

The NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships continue through Friday, Feb. 10 at the Rochester Recreation Center in Rochester, Minnesota. Seven NSIC teams will compete over four days for the NSIC Championship. 
Thursday’s trial sessions will begin at 10 a.m. with the finals set for 6 p.m. Thursday will have the 500 freestyle, the 100 backstroke, the 100 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly and the 800 freestyle relay.
