ST. PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota State won its sixth straight NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships behind an impressive performance at Sea Foam Stadium on the campus of Concordia University, St. Paul. The Mavericks, which have won eight of the last nine titles, scored 247 points to finish 125 points ahead of second place Sioux Falls. The Mavericks won six individual events and two relays at the championship. In all, four new records were set by men’s teams this year’s championship.
The University of Sioux Falls Teddy Frid was named NSIC High Point Performer after scoring 29.5 points. Frid set a new record in the decathlon last week and place first in the 110m hurdles. He finished second in the 400m hurdles and tied for seventh in the high jump.
Minnesota State’s Michael Sandle, the 2017 NCAA Indoor Triple Jump National Champion, set a new record at the NSIC Championships with a leap of 15.94 meters. MSU also broke the 4X400 meter relay record with a time of 3:13.09. The group of John Schuster, Jovonte’ Suber, Isiah Pitchford and Morris Dennis earned the 10 points for the Mavericks.
Also on day one, Josh Barrows of Augustana ran a 52.58 in the 400m hurdle prelims to break the 2010 record of 52.60 set by Northern State’s Jake Hamik. Earlier in the month, Sioux Falls’ Teddy Frid set a new record in the NSIC Decathlon.
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.
The NCAA National Championships will take place on May 25-27 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The entire field for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 16 on NCAA.com.
