ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Winona State University women won its first NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship since 2005 behind an impressive performance at Sea Foam Stadium on the campus of Concordia University, St. Paul. The Warriors amassed 134 points to win by 7.5 points over second place UMary. The Warriors won two individual events and a relay at the championship.
Wayne State’s Michaela Dendginer was name the NSIC High Point Performer after scoring 30 points in winning three events. The six-time NSIC Field Athlete of the Week, Dendginer set a new NSIC record in the hammer throw on day one with a heave of 63.54-meters (208-5) to surpass the 2013 mark of 62.03 set by Wayne State’s Carly Fehringer. In the shot put she threw an NCAA automatic qualifying distance of 16.41 meters. She also won the women’s discus with a toss of 48.07 meters.
The final day of competition started with the Warriors winning the 4x100 meter relay, setting a new NSIC and WSU record in a time of 46.10 seconds. Taylor Juresh, Tamika Tucker, Brittany Schyvinck and Megan Seidl teamed up in the 4x100 meter relay.
The other records that fell on day two include the University of Minnesota Duluth’s Emi Trost in the 800m and the 1500m. Trost ran an NCAA automatic qualifying times in both racing, finishing in 2:04.62 in the 800m and 4:21.48 in the 1500m. Teammate Breanna Colbenson set the record in an NCAA automatic qualifiying time of 10:05.02 in the 3000m steeplechase.
Hanneke Oosterwegel capped off her day winning the 400m hurdles in the NSIC record time of 58.83.
The University of Mary capped off the women’s events with a new record in the 4X400 meter relay. The team of Julia Hammerschmidt, Nelecia Richards, Melanie Rodriguez and Nicol Brown set the record, running a time of 3:41.18.
On day one, in the prelims of women’s 100m hurdles Tonie Pandohie of the University of Mary ran 13.42 to break the 2013 record set by UMary’s Janet Johnson (13.63). In the prelims of the women’s 400m, Winona State’s Megan Seidl ran a 54.40 to break the 2010 record of 54.99 set by Kristi Buerkle of Bemidji State. Earlier in the month, Augustana’s Olivia Montez Brown set a new mark in the Heptathlon.
The top three finishers in each event and the top two relay teams are named to the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference team. NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Athletes and Coach of the Year will be announced next week at NorthernSun.org.
The NCAA National Championships will take place on May 25-27 at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. The entire field for the NCAA Championships will be announced on Tuesday, May 16 on NCAA.com.
