MANKATO, Minn. - Sioux Falls's Teddy Frid won the decathlon as the first event in the 2017 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship took place at the MSU Track & Field Complex in Mankato, Minnesota, the past two days.
Frid broke the NSIC record (and his own USF record) in the deacthlon with 6,975 points, besting Minnesota State's Tandy Juell's 2012 record of 6,968. The score ranks as the seventh best in NCAA Division II this season, just missing the NCAA Automatic mark of 7100.
Frid entered the final five events with a 16-point lead after scoring 3,873 points, which placed him nearly 180 points above his previous first-day best. Opening with the 110-meter hurdles, Frid quickly extended that lead and never looked back. The South St. Paul, Minn. native ran nearly a half-second faster than the competition with a 14.75-second time, adding 880 points to his lead.
On Friday, 5he South St. Paul, Minnesota, native recorded four personal-bests in his five events and nearly equaled the fifth.
Frid won his first multi-event title after finishing fourth at last year's NSIC decathlon and runner-up in the NSIC indoor heptathlon before placing fifth at the NCAA Indoor Championship heptathlon to collect his first career All-American honors.
Minnesota State's Jack Curtis was second with 6,524 points while Wayne State's Robert Sullivan was third with 6,369 points. The meet NCAA provisional marks and earned All-NSIC honors along with Frid.
The remainder of events in the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13 at Sea Foam Stadium on the campus of Concordia University, St. Paul. Events begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
