Augie's Montez Brown breaks NSIC Heptathlon Record

MANKATO, Minn. - Augustana's Olivia Montez Brown won the heptathlon as the first event in the 2017 NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championship took place at the MSU Track & Field Complex in Mankato, Minnesota, the past two days. 

Montez Brown broke the NSIC record in the heptathlon with 5,140 points, besting former Augustana student-athlete and current graduate assistant Bree Woelber record of 5,111 points set last season. Montez Brown's mark ranks sixth nationally and was a season's best point total for her. 

Montez Brown started the day off with a first place finish in the long jump. Montez Brown recorded a mark of 5.77-meters and earned 780 points. In the javelin, Montez Brown notched a personal best with a mark of 32.60-meters, good for fourth and 526 points. In the final event of the heptathlon, Montez Brown raced to a second place finish in the 800-meters, earning 764 points with a time of 2:24.43.

Montez Brown was tied with Concordia-St. Paul's
Kalle Burney  after the first day of competition.  Montez Brown earned 894 points with a season's best time of 14.61, taking third in the 100-meter hurdles. In the high jump, Montez Brown tied for first with a personal high with a mark of 5-4.5, good for 783 points. In the shot put, Montez Brown recorded a season's best toss of 10.85-meters, good for third place and 585 points. To conclude the day, Montez Brown finished in fifth in the 200-meters with a season's best time of 25.88, garnering 808 points. 

Burney finished second with 5041 points while MSU Moorhead's Caroline Jansen was third with 5014 points.  All three
earned All-NSIC honors. 

The remainder of events in the NSIC Outdoor Track & Field Championships will take place on Friday and Saturday, May 12-13 at Sea Foam Stadium on the campus of Concordia University, St. Paul. Events begin at 10 a.m. on Friday and 11 a.m. on Saturday.
