ABERDEEN, S.D. – The University of Sioux Falls won its first NSIC Men's Cross Country Championship as the Cougars scored 32 teams points after four runners finished in the top five. Steven Brown was the top finisher in the race followed by defending champion Mason Phillips and Zach Lundberg as the Cougars had the top three finishers in the race that was held at Lee Park Golf Course in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The Cougars finished 21 points ahead of second place Augustana, a team that had won the last nine NSIC Men’s Cross Country Championships.
Brown won the race by over seven second finishing with a time of 24:11.10 while teammate Mason Phillips had a time of 24:18.80. Lundberg was third with a time of 24:27.10.
Augustana’s Bonheur Mvuyekure was named NSIC Newcomer of the Year after his 11th place finish. The NSIC Newcomer of the Year is awarded to the highest placing student-athlete competing in their first year of cross country competition in the NSIC.
The Cougar’s Head Coach Doug Petersen was voted by his peers as the NSIC Coach of Year.
The top ten finishers are named All-NSIC First Team while finishers 11-20 earn All-NSIC Second Team honors.
UMD’s Kendall Hill was awarded the NSIC Elite 18 Award during the championship presentation. Hill, who won the same award at last year’s outdoor track & field championship, had the highest cumulative GPA of all the student-athletes competed at the men’s championship. Hill is a junior majoring in civil engineering and holds a 4.00 grade point average. The Duluth, Minnesota native finished in 54
th place with a time of 26:13..60 at this year's NSIC Championships and was 60th as a freshman back in 2016.
Next action for NSIC Cross Country will be at the NCAA Regional, which will take place in Joplin, Missouri on Saturday, Nov. 17th. The NCAA DII National Cross Country Championships will be held on Saturday, December 1 at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania as part of the NCAA DII Fall Sports Festival.
