WEST FARGO, N.D. – The 2018 NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships continued with six event finals taking place on Thursday night from the Hulbert Aquatic Center in West Fargo, North Dakota. The three-time defending NSIC Champions of St. Cloud State moved into the lead as the Huskies surpassed day one leader Minnesota State. SCSU now has 442 points while MSU is right behind with 438 points after the second of four days of competition.
Sioux Falls, which sits in third with 304 points, kicked off the night by setting a new NSIC record in the 200-freestyle relay. The team comprised of Ingelin Lima, Giulia Marcon, Cassie Wright and Kyjana Webber swam a time of 1:33.46, which is a Hulbert Aquatic Center record and an NCAA “B” cut time, ranking seventh best in Division II this season. USF broke Minnesota State’s record of 1:33.87 set last season.
St. Cloud State won three individual titles on Thursday night with Andrea Bryson breaking her own NSIC record in the 200-yard freestyle by finishing with a time of 1:50.00, which is .91 seconds faster than her record setting time from last season. Teammate Britin Thomsen won the 1-meter dive as she finished with 425.25 points while Ashley Wilson won the 400 IM as she finished with a time of 4:29. 32.
Minnesota State’s Taylor Bass earned the top finish in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 55.30 while the Mavericks team of Cecilia Hake, Lily Borgenheimer, Emily Bollendorft and Chelsea Calhoon took home top honors in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:48.05.
The NSIC Swimming & Diving Championships continue through Saturday, Feb. 17. Seven NSIC teams will compete over four days for the NSIC Championship. Friday’s trial sessions will begin at 10 a.m. with the finals set for 6 p.m. Friday will have the 500 freestyle, the 100 backstroke, the 100 breaststroke, the 200 butterfly, and the 800 freestyle relay.
The top three finalists in each individual event and top two finalists in each relay event will be recognized as NSIC All-Conference during the meet. A Swimmer of the Year, Diver of the Year, Freshman of Year, Swim Coach of the Year and Dive Coach of the Year will also be voted on by the coaches during the event. Finally, at the conclusion of the meet, the swimmer with the most points will be named the NSIC Swimmer of the Meet and the diver with the most points will be named NSIC Diver of the Meet.
