SCSU advances to semifinals of NSIC/Sanford Health Tournament with 67-56 victory over USF

Behind a team-high 18 points from junior Gage Davis, the St. Cloud State men's basketball team (23-7) earned the 67-56 victory over Sioux Falls (20-10) to advance to the semifinals of the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls.
 
Davis also picked up 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season. Additionally he led the team with his four assists. Sophomore Trevon Marshall picked up 13 points off the bench on 6-for-6 shooting from the field. Junior Brindley Theisen recorded 11 points and two rebounds. Junior Sean Smith totaled 10 points, and four blocks. Senior Jon Averkamp had eight rebounds, seven rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Senior Andy Foley contributed seven rebounds off the bench.
 
Sioux Falls was led by Drew Guebert's 22 points and 12 rebounds.  Trevon Evans had 13 points and four assists. Zach Wessels contributed nine points off the bench.

The Huskies shot 49.1 percent from the field (26-for-53), 40 percent from three-point range (6-for-15) and 45 percent from the free throw line (9-for-20). The team also had 31 rebounds, 10 assists, four steals and seven blocks.  Sioux Falls were limited to 33.3 percent shooting from the field (21-for-63), 16.7 percent from three-point range (3-for-18) and 68.8 percent from the line (11-for-16).  The Cougars had 45 rebounds, eight assists, six steals and one block.

St. Cloud State led 35-25 at the half and held a slight 32-31 edge in the last 20 minutes. The game featured two tied scores and no lead changes. The Huskies largest lead was 15 points at the 4:01 mark of the first half, 32-17, on a Theisen layup.  The Cougars climbed back to with eight points, 57-49, with 5:03 left in the game, before SCSU stood strong and went on to earn the 11-point victory.
 
St. Cloud State men's basketball team, the number two seed in the North Division, continues play in the NSIC/Sanford Health Men's Basketball Tournament and takes on top seed in the South Division Southwest Minnesota State on Monday, Feb. 26, at 2:30 p.m. at the Pentagon.
 
Notes:
- The program has won 21 of the last 25 games.
- The 67 points in a win was tied for the team's lowest point total in a victory this season (67 vs. Mayville State – 11/17)
- Gage Davis, with 18 points against USF, has now scored in double figures in 21 of the 22 games that he has played in this season.
- The team is 18-4 when Davis plays this year.
- Brindley Theisen's 11 points against Sioux Falls was his 20th game this year and ninth time in the last 10 games that he has gotten into double figures.
- Sean Smith's 10 points was his 20th game in double figures this season.
- Smith's four blocks was his 21st multiple block performance of the season.
-The Huskies are 12-2 all-time against Sioux Falls including three wins in a row.
- The team's 23 wins on the campaign is the most since the 2009-10 season when that program picked up 29 games.
- The team's win in the quarterfinals (second round) was the first for the program since 2011 in a 65-59 victory over the University of Mary.
