SMITHVILLE, Mo. – Minnesota State put together a first round 313 to lead after day one of the NSIC Women's Golf Championships played at Paradise Pointe in Smithville, Missouri.  The Mavericks hold an eight-stroke lead over the eight-time defending NSIC Champions of Augustana (321).  This marks the first time since the 2008-09 season that Augustana has trailed in the NSIC Women's Golf Championship and is the first time since 2014-15 that Augustana has not shot the low team round at the championships. 

Minnesota State was led by Maddy Messin who shot a 3-over-par 75 in the first round to lead by two strokes over teammate Haley Tollette and Upper Iowa's Ilayna Long.  MSU had four golfers finish in the top 10 as Genie Short shot an 8-over-par 80 to sit tied for seventh while Alissa Carlson finished with a nine-over-par 81 and is tied for tenth. 

Augustana's Kali Trautman, the two-time reigning NSIC Championship Medalist, sits in a tie for fourth after the first round. Trautman shot six-over par (78). Also sitting in a tie for fourth in freshman Alex Stone as she also shot six-over (78) on the day.  Emily Israelson, the reigning NSIC Golfer of the Year is the third Viking that sits in the top-10 after day one. Israelson is in a tie for seventh after firing an eight-over (80).

The 54-hole championship will resume on Saturday morning with 9 a.m. shotgun starts while the third and final round will be a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday.  The top five golfers will be named NSIC All-Tournament, while the team champion will earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Central Super Regional, which will be played at Missouri Bluffs Golf Club in St. Charles, Missouri, hosted by Lindenwood University on May 7-9.  Augustana is currently ranked first in the regional rankings while MSU is tenth.
