Trip Hedrick was a member of the Bemidji State Men’s Swim Team from 1973-1977. The Newton, Kansas native was the team captain and a six-time varsity record holder in the 50 Free, 100 Free, 100 Butterfly, 400 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay and 800 Free Relay. He was All-NIC in 1975, 1976 and 1977 winning top honors in the NIC 100 Freestyle in 1977. Hedrick earned All-American recognition nine times in three years. He was named First Team NAIA after finishing sixth nationally in the 100 Butterfly in 1976 and in the 400 Free Relay in 1977. He was also honored as Harry F. Bangsberg Student Athlete of the Year in 1977. In 1998, Hedrick was inducted into the Bemidji State Athletic Hall of Fame. Following college Hedrick became a Physical Education and Health instructor at Winona High School, a post he held from 1977 to 1989. There he served as head boy’s swimming coach, winning six consecutive Big 9 Conference Championships from 1982-87 with a 110-25 dual meet record. In 1987-88 Hedrick returned to the college ranks as a graduate assistant men’s swimming coach at the University of Texas at Austin. There the team won the NCAA Division I National Championship. In 1989, he took over as the Head Men’s Swimming Coach at Iowa State University (ISU) and coached the Cyclones for twelve seasons where he compiled an 85-33 dual meet record. Those 85 wins are second-most in Iowa State history and his .720 winning percentage is the highest among Cyclone coaches who served more than one season. Hedrick’s team won the 1995 Big 8 Conference Championship. Hedrick earned conference coach-of-the-year honors twice while at Iowa State. In 1995, Hedrick was named Big Eight Coach of the Year and in 1998 he was Big 12 Coach of the Year. Hedrick’s swimmers excelled both in the pool and in the classroom as his swimmers amassed 32 All American Honors and 27 All American Academic Honors. Hedrick’s love for the sport of swimming goes beyond coaching as he is still an accomplished swimmer. Trip is a 25-time U.S. Masters Swimming National Champion, and has held numerous national age group records in the freestyle and butterfly events. In Masters World Championship competition, Trip has claimed 5 individual world titles, has held 5 individual world age group records and has been on 5 world record setting relays. Since 2001, Hedrick has been with Championship Productions in Ames, Iowa, a company that produces and markets sports instructional DVDs in over 15 sports. He serves as a coaching education director in a number of sports that they offer. Trip is married to the former L’Louise Kester, who is a 5th grade teacher in Ames, Iowa.
