John Schultz came in and was a regular starter as a freshman in 1958 for the Mankato State men’s basketball team.  Schultz, one of the first big men to play for the Mavericks, led MSU to a pair of Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) titles and was named league MVP in the 1960-61 season. In both 1959-60 and 1960-61 seasons Schultz led the league in scoring, averaging over 23 points per game, while leading MSU to 9-1 records each year.  Schultz also led the NIC in scoring in his sophomore season with just over 20 points per game.  He was named to the All-NIC team three times and was earned All-American status as a senior.  Schultz held the MSU scoring record for 28 years with 1720 career points.

Schultz went on to play AAU basketball with the Minneapolis All-Stars in 1962-63 and was a member of the All-Army basketball team in 1964. Schultz is a 20 year retired Army veteran; he served two years active duty and 18 year in the Army National Guard.  He taught school for 34 years, including 31 in Jackson, Minn. Schultz was inducted into the Mankato State Hall of Fame in 1982 and into the Mountain Lake High School Hall of Fame in 2005.

Schultz and his wife of 47 years, Carol, currently live in Jackson, Minn. They have three children (Steve, Brenda and Traci) and eight grandchildren.
