Kerrick Johnson holds the distinction of being the first male athlete from the University of Minnesota Duluth to ever capture an NCAA individual title in any sport. A native of Carlton, Minn., Johnson accomplished that feat twice by winning the 1993 NCAA Division II outdoor discus crown and the 1992 NCAA II indoor shot put championship. He attained NCAA II All-American status on six occasions (three in the outdoor discus, two in the outdoor shot put and one in the indoor shot put) during his four-year career and qualified for four national outdoor meets in the discus, two in the outdoor shot put and two NCAA II indoor event in the shot put. He was a four-time Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference outdoor discus title holder and also claimed a pair of league indoor (1991 and 1992) and outdoor shot put crowns (1992 and 1993). He departed the Bulldog track program in 1993 owning all shot put (indoor and outdoor) and discus records. His discus throw of 179 feet 3 inches at the St. Thomas Invitational on April 11, 1992, still stands as a Bulldog record and is the third-oldest outdoor record on UMD’s books. He captained UMD to its first NSIC indoor and outdoor team championships ever as a senior as he earned undergraduate degrees in psychology and philosophy from UMD in 1993. Johnson and his wife Bridget have three daughters; Zoie (8), Kyra (5) and Maya (3). They reside in Carlton, Minn.
