Jim Kapitan, Minnesota State University Moorhead (1975-1979)
Jim Kapitan was a four-year starter for the Moorhead State University basketball team from 1975 to 1979. Upon completion of his Dragon career, Kapitan was the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in school history.
Kapitan led the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) in rebounding (9.6 rpg) as a junior and currently sits third on the Dragons’ career rebounding chart with 927. His 9.7 rebounds per game during his career also ranks third all-time in NSIC play. He also is tenth all-time in scoring at MSUM with his 1,468 points.
An All-NIC first team selection his junior and senior seasons, Kapitan was also named All-District 13 those years.
After four consecutive losing seasons, Kapitan helped the Dragons to two second place and a third-place finish in the NIC regular season with an overall NIC record of 31-13 during his final three years.
Following his playing career, Kapitan served as an assistant basketball coach for the Dragons. He went on to become an Adapted Physical Education Instructor in the Moorhead Area Public School system where he also coached girls’ basketball, with teams advancing to the state tournament in 2003, 2005, 2007. Kapitan retired this past year after serving 28 years at Moorhead Area Public Schools.
