Bill McDonald excelled for the Mustangs wrestling program from 1985-1989. He was the first SMSU wrestler to be a four-time NAIA All-American. His highest national finish was in the 1987-88 season when he placed second at 158 pounds. He wrestled at 150 pounds his three other seasons, placing eighth nationally in 1985-86, sixth in 1988-89 and fifth in 1986-87. McDonald holds the SMSU records for career takedowns (443) and takedowns in a single season (133). He also ranks second in most matches won (112) and third in winning percentage .835 (112-22-2). McDonald was NAIA Bi-District Champion in 1988 and 1989 while placing second in 1986. He was named SMSU Male Athlete of the Year in 1987-88 as well as his team’s most valuable wrestler that year. The Mustangs won two NIC Champions with McDonald on the squad (1986-87 & 1988-89).
McDonald graduated in 1990 with a degree in Health & Physical Education. He has been coaching football and wrestling at various schools since he graduated. His wrestling teams have won numerous conference championships over the years and three section championships between 1999 and 2006. McDonald has been honored with Section Coach of the Year Award in 1999, 2003 and 2006. He is currently in his 18th year of teaching and has accepted a position at Watertown-Mayer Middle School. Bill and his wife Lis live in Montrose, Minnesota with their three children Brian and Jamie (10), and Nikki (6).
