A native of Albert Lea, Minn., Dave Bergstrom enjoyed a marvelous high jump career at Minnesota Sate University Moorhead from 1976 through 1979. He broke the school record as a freshman and established new records every year, finishing at 7-1 3/4, which still stands today after 27 years. He captured six straight conference titles at the NIC Indoor and NIC outdoor events from 1977 though 1979. A six-time All-American, Bergstrom placed second three time in national meets before winning the NCAA II Outdoor title as a senior with a leap of 7-1 ¾. He also broke the NAIA Outdoor record in 1979 with a jump of 7-1 ½ but placed second based on misses. After college Bergstrom qualified for the 1980 Olympic Trials at Eugene, Ore. After a long break from high jumping Bergstrom, at age 40, started competing in the USA Track and Field’s Master’s competitions. From 1997 through 2002 he jumped in six national age-group meets where he was champion once and runner-up twice.Bergstrom can’t get away from track and field. For the past two years he’s volunteered at MSU Moorhead as the men and women’s high jump coach. This past spring he coached a women’s jumper who attained All-American honors at the NCAA II Outdoor event. Inducted into the Dragon Hall of Fame in 1993, Bergstrom resides with his family in Fargo, N.D. and is employed at Midland National Life Insurance.
