Dettmer, was a three-year member of the Bemidji State wrestling team from 1970-1973. He served as team captain in 1971,1972 and 1973 and was a four-time Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) individual champion, winning the title at 150 pounds in 1970 and 1971 and at 158 pounds in 1972 and 1973. Dettmer is just one of 11 wrestlers to accomplish that feat in the 35-plus years of conference wrestling. A three-time NAIA All-American team member, Dettmer captured the NAIA National Championship in 1971 and finished third in 1972 and 1973. Dettmer was named Bemidji State’s Outstanding Athlete in 1973. In 1972, Dettmer was Minnesota’s Greco Roman champion and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team trials. Dettmer was inducted into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame in 1986. Following his outstanding career on the mat, Dettmer began a career as a physical education instructor. He coached wrestling at Faribault, Minn., High School for 21 years, producing 88 individual state entries, 42 individual state place winners and 12 individual state champions. He led his team to the 1993 Minnesota State High School League championship and was named Region Coach of the Year in 1983 and 1993. Dettmer is a member of the Minnesota State Wrestling Coaches Association Hall of Fame, the Faribault Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. In addition, he received the Lifetime Service to Wrestling award. A Chief Warrant Officer in the United States Army Reserve, Dettmer is also a member of the American Legion and VFW. Dettmer presently resides in Forest Lake, Minn., and teaches physical education at Forest Lake High School.
