Nagel, a Breckenridge, Minn., native, lettered in basketball and tennis at Minnesota State Moorhead. A three-time all-NIC selection in basketball, Nagel was also named an honorable mention selection to the All-America team. Nagel also earned conference Most Valuable Player honors and was the league-scoring champion as a senior in 1962. He led the Dragons in scoring for three straight years and closed his career with 1,211 points. Inducted into the Dragon Hall of Fame in 1992, Nagel obtained his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University. A widely published author and international authority on American fiction, especially Ernest Hemingway, Nagel was named the first Edison Distinguished Professor at the University of Georgia. Nagel is also credited with writing much of the screenplay for the 1997 movie “In Love and War.”
