Northern State
Kevin King was born in Yankton, S.D. on Oct. 27, 1961. He attended Lyman County High School in Presho, S.D. and was a finalist for Mr. Basketball, leading the Raiders to the South Dakota Class B State Championship his senior year (1980). Upon graduation from Lyman County, he enrolled at Northern State University. King received numerous honors during his tenure at NSU (1980-84). In the 1982-83 season, he was named Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) Most Valuable Player. King was also a three-time All-NIC selection, earning second team honors in 1981-82 and first team distinction in 1982-83 and 1983-84. He achieved NAIA All-District 12 First Team twice (82-83 and 83-84) and was named an NAIA Honorable Mention All-American in 1983-84. King, who ranks fourth in Wolves history in career points (1,986), helped NSU to two NAIA District 12 championships (82-83 and 83-84) and one NIC championship (83-84). In addition to his time on the basketball court, King was also a member of the NSU track and field team for two years (80-81 and 81-82). He received the 1983-84 Clark Swisher NSU Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year Award. After his senior year at NSU, King remained active in basketball, competing as a member of a 1984 collegiate European summer tour. He then graduated from NSU with a B.S. in Education in 1985. He was later selected Most Valuable Player of the 1990 North American Indigenous Games held in Alberta, Canada. King began his professional career as a teacher and coach at West Central High School in Hartford, S.D. For three years, he taught physical education and social studies while coaching varsity boys basketball, track and field and junior high football. King then taught Elementary Education in Belle Fourche, S.D. for one year. He remained active in coaching during the early 1990’s, touring Russia with the girls and boys National Indian All-Star High School teams in 1990.
