As a former Dragon running back, Mike Quirk is known even today as a football legend at Minnesota State University Moorhead. He was part of a NIC championship football team his freshman year at MSUM (1966), then as a sophomore began showing his unbelievable talent earning NAIA All-American Honorable Mention and leading the nation in rushing at 154.7 yards per game. This mark placed him second in NCAA Division II rushing yards per game. During his junior campaign in 1968 he was selected as a NAIA First Team All-American, an Associated Press Second Team All-American and finished second in NCAA Division II in scoring with 20 touchdowns and 120 total points. Throughout his illustrious career, Quirk managed to stack the MSUM record book as he is first in single-game touchdowns with five and total game points with 30 in 1968. Adding further value to his amazing 1968 season, he is still second on the school’s single-season rushing chart with 1,392 and third in scoring with 120. Quirk is also in the top five in all-time rushing at MSUM, holding the fourth place position with 3,486 yards and is third in career scoring with 242 points. In 1967 and 1968, Quirk received the Vincent Yatchak Award, given to MSUM’s team MVP, and also was the Dragon team captain in 1969 and 1970. After his collegiate playing days in 1970, he completed his B.S. degree graduating from MSUM, then went on to Saint Louis, Mo. and received a Doctor of Chiropractic degree in 1979. He now owns his own chiropractic clinic and resides in Chisholm, Minn.
