1982-1986
Julie (Hay) Klun holds the distinction of being the University of Minnesota Duluth’s first female NCAA Division II All-American, along with earning UMD’s Outstanding Female Senior Athlete award in 1985-1986. She earned trips to the NCAA Division II national outdoor track & field championships in the long jump four straight years, gaining All-American status in 1983, 1985 and 1986. She left UMD owning nine Bulldog indoor and outdoor records including the long jump and several sprint events. She reigned as the NSC outdoor champion in the long jump for four years, the 200-meter dash for three years, the 100-meter dash for two years and still holds the NSIC record in the long jump (20’-8.5” ) that was set in 1985. To complement her track accomplishments she was also a successful women’s basketball player at Minnesota-Duluth holding the co-captain position as a senior and pacing the club in assists and steals in 1986. Klun was a starting guard for the Bulldogs first-ever NSC championship team in 1984-1985. After obtaining her B.A.S. degree in physical education from UMD in 1987, she coached basketball (1987-1989) and track (1987-1989, 1996-1999) at her alma mater, Duluth East High School. In October of 2001, she was inducted into UMD’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Klun now resides in Duluth with her husband, Dan, and their three children, Sean, Kelli, and Derek.
