Bill Herzog began his profession in officiating in 1952, even before his own graduation from Alexandria High School in 1953. After graduation from Alexandria H.S., he joined the United States Army and earned distinction as a Rank A Sergeant completing a three-year tour of duty from 1954-1957. He then attended the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where he graduated with a B.A. in Physical Education in 1961. Upon his graduation from the U of M, he began officiating high school basketball, a trade that he continues even to this day. Herzog moved to Thief River Falls to become a teacher and coach from 1961-1966. However, in 1966 he began teaching and coaching in the Stillwater (Minn.) School District until 1995, completing a 30-year commitment to the instruction and education of young people. Herzog began his affiliation with the Northern Intercollegiate Conference (NIC) in 1968. His first experience was as a men’s basketball official, while later he became an women’s basketball official for the Northern Sun Conference (NSC) - the former women’s league. Herzog continued to officiate basketball in the NSIC (men’s and women’s) until his retirement in 1995. During his 27 years of officiating he worked as a Big Ten men’s basketball official from 1976-1987, while also serving as the coordinator for NIC/NSIC men’s basketball officiating from 1976-1995, and the NSC/NSIC women’s basketball officials’ coordinator from 1982-1995. In addition to his basketball coordinator duties, Herzog also served as the NIC/NSIC football officiating coordinator from 1977-1995. At one time during his officiating career, Herzog worked 13 consecutive NAIA District 13 men’s basketball championship games. Since his retirement from teaching and coaching in 1995, Herzog has spent the majority of his time with his wife, Carole, at their home in Naples, Fla.
