Mankato, Minn.- The Minnesota State women’s soccer team (13-1-2 overall; 10-0-1 NSIC) squared off against Upper Iowa University (6-7-2 overall; 4-4-2 NSIC) as the Mavericks came to the conclusion of a double overtime 0-0 tie as MSU honored the 2011 senior class (Sarah Schellinger, Marissa Santana, Briana Hendricks) on senior day Sunday afternoon at The Pitch at Gage Towers.
The Mavericks entered the match-up riding on momentum from a 1-0 shutout win against Winona State as the Mavericks looked to build on a 12-game win streak.
During the first half of play the Mavericks had applied heavy pressure as Minnesota State notched seven shots on goals with Upper Iowa dueling out five of their own.
The second half featured relentless pressure as junior midfielder Brianne West received a cross but West unable to take advantage of the opportunity as the shot sailed just over the cross bar of the goal net in the 89th minute of the match.
Upper Iowa responded to Minnesota State’s pressure as forward Danielle Weiss’ shot hit the cross bar with six minutes remaining in regulation play.
During overtime the Mavericks had five shots as the Peacocks contributed one. Peacocks Goalkeeper Amanda Smith had 15 saves on the as MSU Goalkeeper Briana Hendricks had eight saves.
The Mavericks finish their regular season on the road and seek to prepare for Bemidji State University on Saturday, October 29th at 1pm.
