Mavericks Drop Roadrunners in NCAA First Round

Golden, Colo.— The #21 Minnesota State women’s soccer team advanced in the NCAA tournament Friday after it beat Metro State 3-1 in Golden, Colo. The win marks the first NCAA tournament win for MSU since the 2008, when it beat Colorado Mines 3-1. Full NCAA Bracket
 
Minnesota State scored late in the first half at the 30th minute as MSU juniorBrianne West and sophomore Tori Meinhardt went back-and-forth passing before West netted the goal.
 
The Mavericks landed three shots on goal to the Roadrunners two in the first half.
 
Metro State’s Becca Medina struck early to beat MSU freshman keeper Molly McGough in the 48th minute of the match, knotting the game at one.
 
Meinhardt lifted the Mavericks back on top at the 62nd minute on a shot across the field in the upper right corner of the net. The goal marked Meinhardt’s third game-winner and seventh goal of the season.
 
The Mavericks went up 3-1 when the Roadrunners scored an own goal after a Cassie Weik corner kick in the 70th minute.
 
MSU outshot Metro State 10-9 in the game.
 
No. 21 Minnesota State plays No.8 Colorado Mines on Sunday in Golden, Colo., on the Colorado Mines campus at 2 p.m. (CST) The winner of the game advances to the NCAA Central Region Championship.
