Duluth, Minn. - The University of Minnesoa Duluth soccer team is headed to the second round of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/U.S. Bank Women's Soccer Tournament after a 2-1 victory over Augustana College Wednesday afternoon. The Vikings (10-9-0) scored the first goal of the game two and a half minutes into the second half. Jessica Madson found a pass from Ellie Westmeyer to give Augustana a 1-0 lead.
Their lead didn't last long, as the Bulldogs took advantage of one of many scoring opportunities throughout the game. Five minutes into the second half, freshman midfielder Jennifer Smith found a pass from freshman forward Maureen Stormont and rifled a shot from 15 yards out into the back right corner of the net. This was the Bloomington, Minn. native's fifth goal of the year.
The score stayed tied at 1-1 until Stormont, a Stillwater, Minn. native, chipped the ball past Augie goalkeeper Amanda Wagner from two yards out on the far right corner of the field at the 87:16 mark to score her tenth goal of the season. Stormont received the ball from sophomore midfield Sally Stromme, who has accumulated a total of two assists during her collegiate career. The score held at 2-1 for the remaining three minutes of the match.
The Vikings had plenty of opportunities to score, but were only held at eight total shots during the game. UMD had a total of 29 shots throughout the game, with 11 shots on net. Smith led all players with six shots and three shots on goal. Stormont and freshman forward Dani Potter were not far behind her with five shots each.
Both teams committed four fouls during the match, two in each half.
