Mankato, Minn. -- The Minnesota State women’s soccer (14-2-3) team beat Bemidji State (8-8-3) 1-0 in the opening round of the 2011 NSIC/U.S. Bank Soccer Tournament at the Pitch at Gage Towers in Mankato.
Lauren Somers was the hero for MSU as she rifled a ball past BSU’s Abby Kjonaas, who shut out the Mavericks last weekend making 19 saves. The Somers goal was scored in the 33rd minute on a scrum in front of the net shortly after a corner kick.
The Mavericks rifled 15 shots on goal in the game as seven were in the first half. The Beavers landed two shots on MSU freshman goalkeeper Molly McGough, tallying one in each half. The shutout marks McGough’s ninth and the Mavericks twelfth this season.
Second-seeded Minnesota State (14-2-3) advances to the semifinals against third-seeded Minnesota Duluth (11-5-1) on Friday. The location and time of the game depends on the outcome of the Winona State/Upper Iowa game tonight. If Winona State wins, they will host the remainder of the tournament. If Upper Iowa wins, MSU will host the remainder of the tournament.
